Driver shaft question, heavier, stiffer, etc?

Recommended Posts

I've went back and forth with 60-65 gram stiff to x stiff shafts for a few years.  My dilemma is when I get fit into a driver (I've done this several times) I seem to get fit into a stiff flex mid launch type shaft in the 60 grams range.  The past two drivers I've been fit into are the Srixon MK II 9.5 LS with a ventus blue 6s and the ai smoke make with the denali 60s.  I struggled horribly with both on consistency on the course.  I have moved into a Taylormade qi10 ls with a diamana 65s tensie and I seem to hit it much better than those but I still don't feel like I'm always getting it's potential fully out of it. It seems a little heavier and I can feel it more in the swing so I'm thinking this is why I'm hitting it better.  I wasn't fit into this driver as I traded the ai smoke for it locally.  My question is being it feels heavier, I'm thinking of going to a 70 gram driver shaft and I'm wondering if going from a 60 to 70 gram shaft will be a big decrease on distance.  My swing speed ranges from the 103-105 range as I'm slowing down some at 45.  I'm a typical high ball hitter and would love to "line" the ball out in flight some and I'm also thinking the 70 gram shaft may do that.  Any opinions are appreciated.  thanks!

Heavier feel could mean heavier static weight (grip weight + shaft weight) or it could be a heavier swing weight (head weight combined with playing length) or both.

Since it's cheaper, I'd probably first try with playing around with some lead tape on the head first to bump up the swing weight.  Go to the range and add it in about ~2 gm increments and see what happens.   If that doesn't work - you can actually wrap 10 gm of the lead tape around the middle of the shaft (instead) to see what might happen if you do go to a heavier shaft.   Use foot powder spray to see what happens to the consistency of your face impact location.

But to be honest, playing length tends to have the biggest influence on dispersion.

More details here for this type of testing:

Agree with this. Before going to a heavier shaft (which can make results vary drastically), play around with the swing weights, grips etc. first as it costs essentially 0 and can be altered quickly.  Also, since it's a completely different setup that you weren't fit into you might be hitting it well (higher smash factor) but just spinning it a bit more than your previous driver.
