Struggling big time with Wedges

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I’ve been working hard on my game, finally feel in a good place with my bag apart from Wedges.

My irons are 718 AP2, 3/4 longer than standard and 2 degrees upright with Project X 6.5 shafts. Really love hitting them and they go where I want them to.

My wedges are all used Vokeys (52, 56, 60) standard length & lie, using the wedge flex.

52 is used mainly for full shots and the ball goes everywhere except where I want it to go.

Apart from feeling like they are junior clubs length wise is there something causing this issue. Feel like it should be easier to hit wedges. PW in my AP2 set will go where I want it to every time, pull out the 52 and I have no confidence with it.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

This is 90% length, 10% shaft. First off your normal irons are +3/4, you have no chance hitting your wedges well if they are standard. Next the standard vokey wedges are s200 shafts. If your playing px 6.5 you probably want something a little stiffer in the wedges.

I would get your wedges lengthen and see how they feel. If you miss them slightly right also get them bent upright to match.

I play 4 degrees upright, 1/2” extended Ping i230s.  There is no way I could hit standard length and lie wedges. I’d drive the toes into the ground.  Perhaps that’s your issue.  Have you checked the sole of the club after your swings?

My wedges are the same length, lie, and shaft as my irons.

I might book in for a fitting tomorrow, my club pro told me I’d be fine. It’s the Indian not the arrow he said but it feels wrong to hit them. They miss right and the irons have a lovely soft draw.

I’ll update how the fitting goes.

All out of the toe when I hit anyway according to the ball marks.

It’s good to hear in a way I thought I was going nuts

Stick a PX 6.5 in this one at your desired length. You’ll have your answer.

Yeah, he’s wrong.  Two degrees upright AND 3/4” extended is a significant difference from a standard off the shelf wedge.  I’d be shocked if you said that you could hit them as good as your fitted irons.

Agreed with these. All of my wedges are at least +1" because I can't stand stock lengths for the same reasons you said @ShaneJoseph, they feel like junior clubs. Do what Sean suggested above as a test, and honestly i'd start with making the length of the 52* the same as your PW because you can always go shorter if needed. Part of the problem is also likely that your irons at +3/4" are likely heavier than standard, so going down to stock spec wedges gives you the unholy trinity of too short, too light, and too flat compared to the rest of your set, which would throw anyone off.

If the gap wedge experiment with a long PX 6.5 matching your PW works then you'd be primed to put the wedge version of that shaft in your 56* and 60* at the same +3/4" length or similar. As someone that ran into the same issue that also plays slightly overlength irons, my wedge setup is:

PW - 36.50"
50* - 36.25"
54* - 36.25"
59* - 36"

Set up your wedges length and lie the same as your irons. Shaft wise for your wedges, I would recommend PX 6.5 8 iron shafts in them. This will reduce peak height, add spin, and add feel on partial shots.
