To help stop swaying? All Advice please

Looking at justin rose today and relised how wide his stance and how well he coils, i've been suffering with a sway for a while my dad had seen me hit my driver and said how narrow my stance is (not even shoulder width) Can this cause problems (Narrow stance)

ops fundamentals include a relatively wide stance with minimal weight shift. I think the answer might depend on your overall swing fundamentals that you are using.

 

Have you also considered placing a bit more weight on the inside of the back foot? Of having the back foot straight versus angled out? Or keeping the back knee slightly bent? Probably a half dozen ways to get at the swaying problem. Maybe you can experiment with these options on the range and see what works.

I've tried the theory of straighting my right foot, but this seems to produce a pull hook instead of the normal draw i play as for some reason my swing goes out to in when normalaly it's in to out.

It just seems with a wider stance I.E shoulder witdh or a bit more and i can feel myself coil properly,

Don't want to sway? Try the drill of putting your feet together and swinging, you will learn balance and NOT to sway, the other suggestions above are good too.

I've had a double sway for most of 10 years. A big swing with a narrow stance can cause a sway. Best tip I got was from a pro a few months ago that cured my sway and other swing issues....I'm a tennis player for about 35 years...he said "set up so that you could jump quickly in any direction"...he engrained that feeling without a club at first, then handled the club back.

 

To me, that meant "prepare to return a serve" in tennis, or "be an infielder in baseball". It felt like I was wider, and my back was straighter, but on camera it hardly looked different than my old stance. But bottom line - that "ready" sports position is key and my sways are gone. Really feel so much more athletic swinging.

 

Hope this makes sense. Take your "ready" stance in almost any sport a few times (prepare to jump quickly in any direction) then have your dad hand you a club....keep your center - and swing. It might make a difference.

Width of stance does make a difference with weight transfer and can go hand in hand with a sway.....I would say that you are possibly setting up with hips that are too level and shoulders that are too level and you are then having to move laterally/sway to get behind the ball at the top of the backswing. :)

I see where your coming from, but when i set up it looks like the reverse k position but as i start my backswing it seems like i striaghten out my right leg to help keep my balance.

I know my set up is like this due to me working with moniter screens and compering my self to tour pros.

If you are setting up correctly it sounds like you are turning the right hip too far backwards in the 1st move and possibly pulling the arms across you as you are moving across this would be a cause of the right leg straightening as you pull the arms too far to the inside yet try to shift it would give a sway appearance but with thw right leg locking out.......If this is the case then a wider stance will not cure it :)

Excellent image. This is what I do. Take a shortstop ready stance with hands on knees, weight is balanced 50-50 on feet, now let your arms swing free of your knees like you are ready for the batter to hit it to you, then bend at the hips and straighten up until you have the correct spine angle for golf. Feel the instant solidness of your stance. All you have to do now, is adjust into the reverse K.

 

This works for me as I have a tendency to get too close to the ball and have all my weight on my toes.

You are possibly rolling the club open and this then causes you to turn the face down to hit your draw....Your hook from a square right foot would occur when this happens as you cannot complete your turn and it then becomes a hands shot.

 

The reason i feel it is a wrist roll causing it is that if you roll the club your weight shifts to your heels and a lateral shift is the only way to then get weight transfer which then appears as a sway. :)

Pinching my knees together at setup seemed to help me coil nicely lately.

Ok, i can see what you mean, is it easy to fix? Because i've tried a couple of things i.e keep knees flexed wich feels like im "sitting down" and then i cant get through the shot as my right foot stays planted e.t.c

"O Danny Boy" .... gee I'm just in the St Patrick's mood, what can I say ..... I do think it is important to consider the swing fundamentals of each player. ops fundamentals, which I follow, say that the shoulders should be level at address, or close to it.
