is it the swing, or the result?

One thing I've noticed with many good younger players is that they basically have a cookie-cutter swing. It's hard to tell most of today's college players from one another. This is in stark contrast to the old-school ways of the lee travino's and Arnold Palmer's of the world, who formed a solid, reliable swing based on consistency, wrather than "correct" positions. not to say that there's anything wrong with good positions. I believe that part of the greatness of tiger is the fact that he is striving to have the "perfect" swing, including having everything in the right place at the right time.

 

so, much like the unending and unanswerable question of nature vs. nurture, I ask you this. is it better to seek a perfect swing, or better to find what works for you? is the secret in the dirt, or will you also find it in the camera lense?

The textbook correct positions are easier to repeat consistently and more easily create solid ball contact.

This is why it's the most popular path among the best young players, it's the path of least resistance.

Also, Tiger built his swing on textbook fundamentals and the younger players want to emulate him.

I've made this exact same argument, many times.

 

I then sat down in front of the tube and watched a lot of good golf the past month. The thought occurred to me that I was seeing a LOT of unconventional swings doing very well. I also practice with a college team at my home course frequently, and their swings are pretty darn diverse as a whole. I'd say that perhaps the peak of this "mechanical" trend might be passing and that we are starting to see many unusual but effective styles emerge. There's no question that there is a mechanical nature to a lot of swings on tour, but if you really sit and watch, I've found that there are plenty of young guys doing very well now that look as individualistic as any of the Trevino, Palmer, and Floyds of their era.
