Reg shafts cause a weak fade?? after playing with Stiffs??
-- sorry if this is in the wrong place?? tried to figure out where it should belong?? --

I have two sets of Nike Pro Combos --- One for NZ which are a Stiff Speedstep, and another set for USA which are a regular Speedstep...

My New Zealand set are also flattened 2 degrees...

I didnt realize I had two different shafts until I played the other day in NY... (I was playing about every 3rd day in NZ for the last month) .

I went out and found that especially off my Mid irons I was getting a week fade... I talking from about 160-180 yards out Im getting maybe 10-15 yards fading right??

I wasnt having this problem in New Zealand with the stiff shafts???

Are my shafts the problem? or the fact the NZ set are flattened 2 degrees?

New shafts? or flatten my irons? ha ha

Any suggestions? I play to a pretty consistant 9h/c?

Thanks in advance :)

I would say the Nike Speed Step in stiff is more like a uni-flex shaft, not stiff, but definitely not regular. The Nike regular shafts might be a bit weak for you!

Hmm...

Shows what I know :) ha ha. I figured the club was staying flexed as I was striking the ball creating an open face...

Also, if I stand at address the toe is already off the ground when the heel is on it? would going more upright cause the toe to come even further off the ground? Im 5'10" and 104 avg swing speed with my driver...

Thanks so far, I REALLY appreciate the input...

^^ Now that was my thinking...

Now just to clarify... Excuse the rudimentary sketch :) ha ha

The one on the left (to my knowledge) would be a flat lie? eg I have had the lie flattened to this... and on the right would be an upright lie? eg I would get it adjusted more up-right for this?

Just need to make sure Im thinking this correctly... My NZ set have been flattened 2* so that would mean the toe has been lowered closer to the deck as per pic below on left?

This is golf basics I know, but I want to make sure I have my thinking correct...

Your drawing is correct.

As far as the toe being up in the air at address, that is fairly typical because the centripetal force generated during the swing will cause the toe of the clubhead to move down to various degrees depending on your swing characteristics and the shaft flexibility. That is one of the basic differences between a static and a dynamic fitting. You want the sole to be parallel to the ground at impact, not necessarily at address.

You can check your lie angle by putting impact tape (or black electrical tape) on the sole and hitting a few balls off an impact board. The mark on the bottom should be centered under the sweet spot, too far to the toe and the lie is too flat, too far to the heel and the lie is too upright.

Hope this helps.

I would have them bent 2 degrees upright and see what happens...

Generally when a shaft becomes too flexible your misses will go left (RH) and once a shaft becomes too stiff your misses will be out to the right (RH)...

This is what happens for me - when a shaft is too stiff I get a push to the right.

If it is too soft I can turn it over too much and get a high hook.

I play mostly R flex tipped frim and will still see the hook if I am swinging too hard (even in short irons). The good thing is I know how to fix it when it happens - SLOW DOWN. :clapping:

This is all assuming I am swinging correctly, an outside to in swing will cause a slice with any shaft and that swing with a softer shaft could cause a worse slice.

Just my opinion.

  • 2 weeks later...

well... I put some DG300 Stiffs into my Irons, and while I lost the fade to the right and managed to hit it ALOT straighter, I have to say I dont like the shafts, haha.

Talk about feeling like I am playing with some planks. Man oh man, they just felt dead... Im going to give them another round but was quite dissapointed... Maybe DG300Rs would have been better... and closer to my Speedstep stiffs...

funnily enough I shot the same score, thanks to some CRAP wedge play, so maybe another fwe rounds and I may grow to like them...

Thanks again for all the input fellas :good: Appreciate it!!

WRX dont give up on them so soon! When i changed from Reg to stiff shafts in my Irons, it took 1-2 months to get used to the feeling.

I had Callaway X-18's with reg flex, i loved the weight of the club. It was all in the clubhead and i could really feel the swing. Changed to the Mizuno MP-57's and i lost that great feel. I was unsure if i would get used to them or like they as i did not enjoy the feel from swinging them.

Today, i couldnt think about going back to them!
