Iron Extending / Regripping Question ! need some wisdom!!

hey there... I plan on extending my irons soon.... i have a little problem.... I have noticed that my shafts are True Temper Super Light S300s and and the butt size is .600 ... now here are my questions pardon me if it they are silly ones..

 

 

1. Do i need size .600 extensions or should i go for .580 so they will be really snug or will that not even fit?

 

2. Just because the butt size is .600 when i get new grips do i have to find the ones that say .600 or can i use just the standard .580 ????

The .600 extensions will be tapered to accomodate your existing shafts. Go for the appropriate diameter when you buy them.

 

In terms of grip sizing, you can put pretty much any size grip onto any butt diameter. .580 on a .600 butt is actually considered 'standard' these days even if it is slightly oversized compared to a .600/.600 combo which was the 'old' standard.

 

A smaller core size on a grip (e.g. .580 is smaller than a .600 grip) actually has thicker walls and will thus give a thicker, slightly oversized, grip when stretched over a larger shaft butt.

 

The best idea (if you're not saving your grips) is to check the grip size on the inner lip of the grip beneath the bottom 'hole' to see what they are, and try to replicate the size. It's hard to tell, but you can generally discern if more than one layer of tape has been used when you cut off or remove the grips. The same taping, and an identically-sized grip should replicate the thickness you have currently.
