I read somewhere once (Golf Digest?) that your gross score is going to be 93 - 2*#GIR, so with 32% GIR that almost 6 out of 18, so your gross score should be around 93 -2*6 = 81, or a handicap of 9, assuming std par of 72. That suggests that your number of GIR is good for your handicap, so likely not that. Looks like your power/long game is doing pretty good. Scrambling I cannot quantify, but gut reaction says that 28% is low... My guess would be that your area of needed improvement is short game(not much a surprise there, dont we all need to better that?)

What are your putting stats? Not as much putts per round as putts per GIR?

Best regards,

i like working from the bottom up. Focus on one main thing (although keep practicing the other parts of your game, just have to devote more time to this part) and improve upon it - and do the same thing for every part of your game. Then once you've progressed, start again and build it up - make it more solid. Over my two years of playing this game :good:, that's what i've figured to be the best way to improve - focusing on one main thing. I started on short game last year and improved that, just by reading Dave Pelz's short game book, understanding my strengths, limitations, the greens and higher percentage shots better + practicing my putting every night. Then I've moved onto a complete overhaul of my long game so that i can do more with less practice. I've improved my GIRs and went from around about your average to 10+ - but i haven't been playing all that much lately so i couldn't tell u the truth of those stats, only that i hit 8 greens today in pennants and hit the ball absolutely CRAP. I hope that helps a bit - and its reminded me a few things i need to do - like getting myself a real swing coach - not myself hahaha. Good luck!

Without seeing your stats, I'm not sure how we can determine what the key stat is? Golf Digest, May '06 has a formula for breaking down your game and seeing your weak points. I checked online, but couldn't find anything, however. Maybe someone here can givce you details about the article.

the best way to cut strokes off anyone's handicap, I think, is to concentrate on 3-10 ft putts. you can be a crappy lag putter and have sub standard short game but if you make 3-10 ft putts regularly, it doesn't really matter as much. It can improve your score on a hole whether or not you hit the green, potentially. Nicklaus and Woods were and are known for being GREAT from this range and I don't think it's a coincidence.

Same for every level-up & downs. Like Pelz says "Where you putt from, is more important than how well you putt!" You can take 2 rounds. Hit 12 greens in one and 8 in the other. Get up and down a few more times and make a few more putts and you shoot 5 or 6 strokes better in the round where you hit 8 greens. Take the pros Tiger hits 73.26% GIR & Scoring Avg. or 67.73 while Brett Wetterich hits 71.16% GIR and has a scoring avg. of 72.65. Brett hits not even 1 less green a round than Tiger, but shoots 5 shots worse per round. 20 strokes per tournament.

I think the formula is 95 - 2* # GIR, say you have 8 GIR, you will be most likely get a score of 79. The conclusion of that article is the GIR is critical stats.

60* Lob wedge will lower your scores around the greens. I use it inside 50yds and it has lowered my index by at least 5 strokes. Get one with a very low bounce for cleaner contact on tight lies. I hated the lob wedge at first because I kept sculling my short pitches......BUT I worked with it for a few months and now it's one of my favorite clubs.

I'm in the same handicap range, as are a few other I golf with. Keeping my stats last year, it was pretty obvious that it was putting killing me. The other guys had the same results. My average putts per GIR were around 2.3. Putting kills me every year. I hope to work on that a bit myself.

Likewise, pitching/chipping inside 40 yards was hurting me a bit too. I do significantly better if I'm at a range where I can take a pull swing, so course management has helped. Not necessarly hitting the ball as far as I can, but getting myself to a distance where I can approach the green with a full gap wedge has helped.

I track 3 stats to chart my golf round

Fairways Hit (you can possibly count if you have a clear shot to the green)

GIR ( If I am putting from the fringe I may count it as "hit")

Putts. ( No, NONE, zero 3 putts allowed , please)

If you look at these stats it will point out where you need to practice.

Accuracy, Control, touch, feel are words to understand.

I played with a couple yesterday that had no clue on reading greens. I helped them on putting lines and they both had personal bests on that course. Just some information is usually enough to generate improvement.
