Holing Out

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help?

While playing today i was advised that i did not have the right to hole out after i had hit a long put which left me a five footer.

i stated as i walked up i'll finish"

But was told "you cant do that you are playing out of turn"

Now his guy is a know all but after playing for 20 years i think i have a fairly good knowledge of the rules but when he said check your rules book i could not find anything on this so is it an unwritten rule or is he right or is their a rule that states cause i cant find it?

Any help would be gratefull

In stroke play you have the right to - and many say it speeds up pace of play. Although, typical etiquette is that furthest out plays first, there are no firm rules and ready golf makes the round faster. Your playing parter is wrong unless . . .

In match play whoever is away must play first regardless of where they are. Say your opponent is ten feet away from the hole in a bunker and you have an eleven foot putt. You will putt before he plays his bunker shot. First time a player plays out of turn the opponent can ask the player to replay the shot (ala Pat Bradley), the second time is a penalty.

Hope that helps.

I don't think it's ever a penalty for playing out of turn....

10-1. Match Play

c. Playing Out of Turn

If a player plays when his opponent should have played, there is no penalty, but the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke so made and, in correct order, play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5).

I hear that all the time, in stroke play, mind you. It's just people who a) don't know the rules, and b) have never ever seen a tour event on tv.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

In stroke play playing out of turn is just a breach of etiqutte and there is no penalty. However, if it was done for the purpose of gaining an advantage or creating a disadvantage (for you or someone else) then that is grounds for disqualification.

Similarly, in match play, there is no penalty except that an opponent may require you to cancel the stroke and play it again when it's your turn.

There are no penalties under the rules of golf for etiquette breaches. However, that does not mean that there are not repercussions. If you repeatedly breach etiquette, the committee may disqualify you, ban you from future tournaments, etc.

Continuous putting is not against medal play rules. In fact the USGA encourages continuous putting as it improves speed of play.

Rich Beem. Winning the tournament against tiger (the players?). "I putted out every chance I got, I didn't want to have to think about the putt i had left if possible". I have been practicing this ever since in tournament stroke play with much success.

Just don't step in another players line or "through line" (the line that extends 3 feet behind the hole of any players putting line.

Cheers Guys

the R & A at St Andrews (well you might as well go to the top!) sent me the following

Thank you for your email of 20 April in which you raise a query on the Rules of Golf.

Although a query can only be considered by the Rules of Golf Committee officially if submitted in accordance with Rule 34-3, I would confirm that the ball that is farthest from the hole is played first . Assuming is it is stroke play please see Rule 10-2b and c below.

Rule 10-2b. During Play of Hole

After the competitors have started play of the hole, the ball farthest from the hole is played first. If two or more balls are equidistant from the hole or their positions relative to the hole are not determinable, the ball to be played first should be decided by lot.

Exceptions: Rules 22 (ball assisting or interfering with play) and 31-4 (four-ball stroke play).

Note: When it becomes known that the original ball is not to be played as it lies and the competitor is required to play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5), the order of play is determined by the spot from which the previous stroke was made. When a ball may be played from a spot other than where the previous stroke was made, the order of play is determined by the position where the original ball came to rest.

c. Playing Out of Turn

If a competitor plays out of turn, there is no penalty and the ball is played as it lies. If, however, the Committee determines that competitors have agreed to play out of turn to give one of them an advantage, they are disqualified.

So there you have it , i was in the wrong!! :shok:

Still you learn something new everyday

Thanks for all your comments

Did you specifically ask them about putting and all the balls being on the green? It has always been my opinion that rule 22-2 is an exception to rule 10-2b. I believe that the comment ("note") to rule 22-2 states that once on the green, it is up to the players discretion, whether his ball is interfering with play. If he thinks it is, he has the option (rule 22-2, last sentence) to either mark and lift it or to play first without breaking rule 10-2b in the process.

"22-2. Ball Interfering with Play

Except when a ball is in motion, if a player considers that another ball

might interfere with his play, he may have it lifted.

A ball lifted under this Rule must be replaced (see Rule 20-3).The ball

must not be cleaned, unless it lies on the putting green (see Rule 21).

In stroke play, a player required to lift his ball may play first rather than

lift the ball.

Note: Except on the putting green, a player may not lift his ball solely

because he considers that it might interfere with the play of another

player. If a player lifts his ball without being asked to do so, he incurs a

penalty of one stroke for a breach of Rule 18-2a, but there is no

additional penalty under Rule 22. "

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.
