Trimming putter shaft

advice, tips?

I would like to trim my redwood anser shaft about 3/8 of an inch. Ping will not do it because they work in 1/4 inches. I know I'm probably being picky, but I think that could make this the perfect putter for me. I really like everything about it, but I have to choke up and that isn't the best for guaranteeing the same hand placement everytime. I know this will change the weight/balance, but that's okay too because it is a 340 gram head which is typically for a 34 inch putter and I'm going from 34.75 to 34.375 so I'll be getting closer to standard. Anyways I've never done this before, all I've ever done myself is regripping, so I thought I would see if anyone had any advice before I proceed. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Hi,

1. Swingweight putter to determine the original current swingweight that you enjoy
   
2. Remove grip (I use air compressor with PVC tube slightly bigger than grip)Cut 3/8" from butt end of shaft
   
3. Add lead or tungsten powder in shaft and swingweight check to desired S/W, cork when OK
   
4. Replace grip
   

You can bypass 4. above by adding lead tape to putter head to get the desired S/W, but you'll require quite a few inches as a putter is a shorter club.

 

In 2. above, be careful of some putter grips, they're 3 piece and the top and bottom ends of the grip need to be taped otherwise you'll blow them apart and will be ruined.

 

Some will inject acetone or similar to remove grip, but it's too risky to use an injection and I refuse to do, I've seen a guy who nearly died injecting, his arm turned black within a few minutes and was lucky to survive and keep his arm.

Hi,

 

Yep, got that, but if you want to shorten the club and try and retain the swing feeling, you'll need to swingweight back to what it was, otherwise it will feel lighter when you swing it.

 

In non-technical terms, swingweight is a measure of how the weight of the club feels when it's swung. Why is it important? Because if your clubs do not match in swingweight, they may not all feel the same to you during your swing.

 

As for the technical definition of swingweight, here's how clubmaker Ralph Maltby describes it: "The measurement of a golf club's weight about a fulcrum point which is established at a specified distance from the grip end of the club."

dont worry about the swing weight of a putter. either pull the grip and shorten it or pull the shaft and trim it, either way 3/8'' will be no problem and your not going to notice the weight difference

I agree you will not notice a diff. with the amount your talking about trimming. If you really want to get a great feeling putter, install a heavier grip. It made my Never Compromise smooth as silk. I have the head weighted to the max. 360g and installed a jumbo Winn. My stroke was instantly improved due the weight. It feels more balanced, instead of having all the weight at the head.

Thanks guys. I'm definitely not worried about the swingweight. Actually, I'm going to like that the putter feels a little lighter because it's closer to what I've always been used to. Does anyone have any tips for the actual trimming of the shaft (which I've never done before)?

Tubing cutter from Lowes, or Home depot. You will find them in the plumbing depts.
