Ping S59 vs ???

Want to know about S59
I'm a Ping fan, I had Eye2's , ISI's, Zing2's, I3's and I3+'s. I really like my new Ping Tour wedges, 52-56-60. Now I look at the S59's and as they are similar to the S59, wondered if I would like them at least for the 5 iron to PW ( I prefer hybrids over 3 and 4 irons). My swing as changed and all I do with any big sole and big offset irons now is really high draws-hooks. (ready to divorce from my Zing2's) I want to hit fades on command and lower my trajectory. For references, how is the S59 compared to Armour V-31 R.O.? Titleist 981,990? Hogan apex plus? All irons I had in the past. Being left-handed, it' hard to find a set to try. The Taylor MAde LT2 is interesting too, but is it more forgiving than the S59?

Thanks for taking the time to read me!

Maybe this might help.

I had ISIs before I got my S59s. The main two differences is that when you hit the ball on the toe of the club you really know it with the S59 compared with the ISIs, and I like the reduced offset.

The ISIs was a bunch more forgiving on the toe of the club. When you strike the ball in the center or closer to the heal the S59s fell very similar if not a bit better. It has been a while since I hit the ISIs but the thing I noticed first was how much less forgiving on toe hits the S59s are. The trajectory did come down a little for me, but I am a high ball hitter and had X100 put in ISIs, so it came down some which I needed. Yes you can work the ball fine with the S59s

I grew to really not like the offsets in the ISIs. The progressive increase in offset is nice, so you have a little still in the longer irons and not as much in the lower irons.

Overall I went with the S59s because they felt very similar to my ISIs, but got rid of the offsets, and brought the flight down. The only thing you might miss at first is the forgiveness on toe hits. Now I like the fact that I know I did not hit the sweet spot.

Thanks for your help. The ISI's are the ones I liked the most, but to find a set today for a left-handed is very hard. Ping only made them in copper and in nickel for us lefties, which are rare and expensive in the used market. But like you, I don't like offset anymore and I'm pleased to know that from your experience, I have a chance the S59's fit my needs; minimum offset and low trajectory. I don't know my swing speed with irons, but hitting a 8 iron 150 yards, I think I will be able to get a good trajectory with the S59. Now let's find a lefty set... ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

This morning I went to Golftown store to compare the S59 and the I5. The idea was to compare the two because I can get them used in great shape for cheap, $300 for S59 and $400 for I5. But they don't even have any Ping set in left-handed... But just by the look of the righties I had in my hands to compare, the i5 are more confidence inspiring than the S59 (I'm a 10 hdcp). But now I'm confused, as I can also get a $200 set of i3+, half the cost of the i5's.

Has anyone played the I3+ and the I5? I'd like to know if the ball flight is really higher with the i3+ due to the thicker sole. That was my only reason to firstly look the s59.

Maybe it is confusing;

'Has anyone played the I3+ and the I5? I'd like to know if the ball flight is really higher with the i3+ due to the thicker sole. That was my only reason to firstly look the s59.'

I meant that I was looking the s59 for the lower ball flight, but since I'm sure I would struggle with the long irons, I was looking at I5's. My question is; all things beeing equal, is the I5 lower in ball flight than I3+?
