Where to play in St. Louis

One quick recommendation is StoneWolf. It's a fun track and can play close to 7000 from the black tees. It's one of very few Jack Nicklaus' public course designs. Last time I played there I played the last 6 holes w/ Vince Coleman and Ozzie Smith

Stonewolf or Far Oaks which is right across the street...those are across the river in Illinois tho. I don't really know of any good public courses over in Missouri, but im sure there are plenty here who do.

The Falls is a pretty decent track too...closer to where you'll be too.

Gateway and Annbriar are my favorites. Stonewolf isn't bad - some good holes but I am not a fan of the routing. Also, too many houses.

the bluffs is nice (private)... there are alot of decent tracks out there... anything more to the south, like in the Tapawingo, is nice... north is not so good. I personally thought Gateway was a joke... its long yes, but very boring. Go south rather than to the Illinois side.

I'll second Annbriar. It's a Michael Hurdzan course and I feel it's the best public course in the area. Unfortunately, it's on the opposite side of town from where you are.

 

Closer to you, Stonewolf and Far Oaks on the Illinois side are very good. Gateway National does have bent grass fairways and plenty of length. South of you, Tapawingo and Pevely Farms are also great courses.

 

I think one of the overlooked courses (because it's a muni) is Spencer T. Olin in Alton, Ill. It's an Arnold Palmer course with a great mix of holes and can usually be played for pretty cheap.

 

If you've got the juice to get on some of the elite private courses, St. Louis CC, Old Warson, Sunset, and Bellerive are incredible. The Missouri Bluffs is semi-private and you can probably get a time on there. It's a Fazio design with some good elevation changes.

Tapawingo, Annbriar, and Pevely Farms are my favorites as far as public's go. Glen Echo and Norwood Hills are private's you can try to membershop and play.

without a doubt, go to spencer olin in alton. only 20 minutes from florissant. when it first opened, it was the best public course in town. still in great shape, and the best price anywhere. trust me on this one. you can play all day with lunch included for around 30 bucks. when you're finished playing, go to Fast Eddies bar there in Alton.

All those courses mentioned above are the quality public courses in St Louis area. If you are more restricted in your ability to travel there are 3 courses that are just average but are worth a afternoon. Eagle Springs which is just outside Florissant in North County. The Pipe Fitter's course called Emerald Greens, short but fun and then there is the Florissant City course called Old Fleurisant. None of these courses are special but they are playable and available if you dont have the transportation to hit Spencer T, Annbriar, my personal favorite, Far Oaks, Gateway, and Stonewolf and the MO Bluffs which is semi private.
