Question about my clubs turning in my hands.

Hello all. I'm looking for the possible cause and solution as to why my golf clubs are turning in my hands causing a hook. It's never really happened before now, but it's been going on for two months. I thought it was the grips I was using, but it's doing it with my old faithful grips I got put back on my clubs? What can fix this issue? Would a midsize grip help?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had the same problem last Saturday. Was hitting the ball great and all of a sudden it felt like the club was turning at the top of the backswing and I was hitting massive hooks with the face shut. I couldn't figure it out and it was very frustrating. I think the main thing is that I was swinging too hard/fast but hopefully I'll hit the range to find out tonight.

Bad grips or a bad grip most likely.

I also thought it could be bad grips, however I'm experimenting with 5 different grips on different clubs and it's still happening. I honestly can't think of what could be happening in my hands to have this happen. I'm a scratch golfer and have never had this happen. Still at a loss...

Your back swing may be getting too quick. I can't see how it could happen if it is nice and slow. If it's happening in the downswing it has to be a swing plane issue.

perhaps regripping at the top. have you videotaped your swing to watch the technique? might help.

IMO, this is more of a swing fault than a grip issue.

 

I was having issues with this and worked on this yesterday. This is what I found out:

1. Use a "neutral" grip. Make sure you're not gripping it with the left hand that is rotated too far right, this promotes a really quick head turnover. Look to set the left hand on the grip with the back of the hand pointing horizontal and then set the right hand onto the grip.

2. At the top of the backswing, check your right arm elbow. Make sure it ain't pointing back. It has to be passive, and when you look back, it should be like you're holding a plate full of drinks, vertical and straight - NOT JUTTING OUT BACKWARD! This can cause a lot of problems ESPECIALLY when the club head is on top and across the target line, pointing right of the target, no, no, no!

3. Ease off the tension in the arms and the trunk so everything move and rotate without tension.

4. Swing for 150 if you're practicing your driver. Nice easy and don't kill it.

 

This should get your club head on plane, release correctly and straight with just a tad draw. Contact should be solid.

not sure of the grips you are using, but are any of them corded? When I played non corded grips they would get slick with sweat during hot summer days sometimes which would make them slip. Corded grips corrected that problem.

 

Although, the more I think about it, when they slip on me they slipped open causing a slice. It really does sound like you may be either be a re-gripping at the top just before you start your downswing, or you may need to take a look at your grip strength.

I fought this exact same problem for a couple seasons. It turns out I was regripping that club with my right hand at the top of the backswing. At address, my grip would be perfect. After I hit a ball, I would return the club to the address position and the club would be closed. I would hit a ton of pulls and hooks this way, and it was making me crazy trying to figure out what the problem was.

 

If your clubface is closed after you hit the ball, then you are regripping. I fixed the problem by keeping my hands very calm on the club. I would think "seal the grip" where I would work on not letting my hands shift on the club at all.

 

It took quite a bit of time and practice to fix it, but it is doable. Good luck.

i had this problem and my coach fixed it. It is because your left hand is too far right on the grip. Grip it more on the top of the grip and cross over with the over hand. I did it and fixed it.

Another hint: flatten your back swing a tad, the left arm would calm the hands from pointing the head toward right of the target. It's a b*tch to fix but hey it's golf: Always a work in progress.

Also it might not hurt to clean your grips every so often. They do get alot of dirt and sweat and all that other not so nice stuff on them after a few rounds.

I clean mine off usually after every 2 rounds and they stay nice and tacky.
