loud people on the course

Recommended Posts

what happened to the respectful game?
I usually play at a little course out of the way that is basically an "outdoor bar"!! I traveled today with some buddys to a decent course and noticed really that there is an alarming trend of people/"golfers" on the course who are very loud and sometimes scream across fairways at each other!! I was into a birdie putt and this dude like loudly dog whistles to his buddy screaming "i found your ball i found your ball"!! I guess public golf is public golf but people in general these days are disrespectful-whether it is on the road or in a shopping mall I have noticed people are very loud and boisterous!! I used to love to escape to the course for some peace and quiet but that is a thing of the past! I guess it is worth joining a club but some cannot afford it........just my little rant for the day...what do u guys think??hahaha

Another reason why I will bet joining a club for next season. It just seems that people think they are the only ones on the course, or that the rest of the course is really interestedin their conversation, because they're making damn sure the rest of the course can hear it.

I played a little dog track the other day. Heavy rain the night before kept most people away, so I was just flying along. I get to the turn, and the 1st and 10th tees are separated only by a couple of trees, so if a mosquito farted on one tee, you hear i on the other. A guy was there with his kid, and appeared to be over his ball to hit, so I stopped walking, held the clubs so they didn't make noie. He wasn't hitting so I went along. I'm over my ball, and on my downswing his kid hits the ball and he yells out "great shot! way to go!" So naturally my shot ends up well left, and this guy was completely oblivious. I have to keep reminding myself these idiots are not worth even acknowledging, but it's tough when a bogey goes on the scorecard because they think othe people are interested in what they have to say.

it just comes down to people not having common courtesy like they had like say in the 40's and 50's.....i truly believe some people take their freedom of speech and freedom in general as an excuse to be ignorant.

Public golf for sure... had a similar experience this past Monday. Went out as a single and got hooked up with a guy and his son (probably 12 yo) out for a birthday round for the son. In fact, the father said he had just got the kid some clubs at Walmart for his birthday and that he (the dad) had only been on the course twice in his life. He asked me to tell him what he was doing wrong and to share some important rules with him. I told him mostly about etiquette even as the son was talking rather loudly and racing the cart around while I was over the ball.

I wasn't rude, but was happy to go ahead and hook up with another single to finish the round. To be fair, the dad was very polite and told his son to calm down. This is the very reason though I would spend the money to join a club...

You were golfing on public courses in the '40s & '50s?

nope...but my grandparents did and they have shared stories of how much people have changed in that aspect and I believe them!!

Like you said: it's public golf.....

That's why i only play at private courses, where people know how to dress, act, and play golf.

Have to admit that I'm a bit of an elitist when it comes to golf: i cant stand when people dress in blue jeans to play golf.

The game is evolving, why do you care what others wear on the course? So if you played with me one day and enjoyed yourself and the next day I showed up in jeans you would think less of me as a golfer? I dont wear jeans on the course but I dont care if others do. I just think its funny that some people take the game so serious, you cant swing a club because someone says something in your backswing? Maybe you shoulda waited for them both to tee off if you were so worried about it. A lot of people dont play golf because of people that act like you when they take up the game.

If by "a lot of people don't play golf....." you mean people who don't think that they should have to follow any customs, etiquette or rules, then count me in the column that wishes them well in their chosen endeavour and does not miss their presence. If they play non-contact hockey, is it ok for me to join them and start hitting them, and tell them not to take the game seriously? What if they are model railroaders? Can I go in and just start tearing apart their models? If they say something I should tell them not to take it so seriously?

There are customs and protocols in everything in life, and golf is no different. "The game is evolving" is the defense used by those who do not wish to have to live up to standards. That or things are evolving such that it's ok to act like an a** on the course.

You wouldn't dream of playing basketball in a pair of jeans, what is so hard about putting some dockers or decent looking shorts to play golf? I've seen it time and time again, people who look the part, actually play the part, at least so far as etiquette goes. If a person doesn't care what they wear, they dno't tend to care what they do on the course.

And if you think that people should be able to talk in another person's backswing, well...I'm just going to leave that one alone.

I'm not PC, and I don't really care. But I'm a firm believer in people rising up to a standard, not lowering a standard to accommodate. "The game is evolving" is just a euphemism to justify pandering to the lowest common denominator. Call me elitist. Forgive me for having expectations of people.

Are you a member at all these private courses? if not what is your secret for getting on them?

just curious

I dunno... the few times I've played at private clubs I've always felt it was so uptight and serious...

Public golf is great because you get to mix and meet all sorts of people. Although yes, it's true, some people do need to be schooled on the etiquette.

It's our job to keep promoting these rules on the course! If someone steps on my line, I tell them how to go around it and hope they do so in their future rounds. If a couple guys are chatting while our 4th is teeing off, I'll signal to them to shut up... and so forth...
