Can I cut a 2i length shaft to 6i length?

Newb question
Well I need to replace my 6i shaft. It is a project X 6.5 satin so it is kind of hard to find. There is a guy on ebay that sells 1i and 2i length Satin shafts and I was wondering if I should buy the 2i shaft and cut it down to 6i length.

If I can how much should I cut off and where?

Thanks

IIRC there is an independant taper rate for each shaft, which would mean if you did that you'd have a fubar 6i. That and you'd effectively be softstepping 3 or 4 times....not good.

Damn.....Where can I get a Satin Project X 6.5 6i length without it costing and arm and a leg?

I need it because I accidentally cut my 6 iron a inch too short. I did add an extension but because the extension material weights more than the actual shaft material....it through my swing weight off.

I think you'll struggle to find one unless you get very lucky and drop on one by pure chance.

How much out is the swingweight? I'd be surprised if it's massively out of kilter for a 1" extension; certainly I'd think it would be correctable with a lighter extension and/or a bit of lead tape. The long iron shaft idea is off to a non-starter IMO.

Addressing the extension (or headweight) issue has to be a better bet than living in hope of finding a satin 6 iron shaft. You'll need to be luckier than Hugh Heffner to find one, I reckon.

Majority of my irons are between D1.5 (6iron) to D5 (7 iron) while all of the other clubs are between D3.5 and D5. I plan on adding cork and lead powder to get the SW's right. I have been told that the 6 iron will have a noticeably heavier static weight than my other clubs even though the Swing weights will be the same due to the heavier material the shaft extension is made out of.

Thoughts?

Hmm..

The static weight point is true enough, and the club will already be heavier than it should be owing to the weight of the insert in the butt. Adding maybe 6g to the head will obviously exacerbate things from the point of view of static weight, albeit your swingweight will be round about where it should be.

The rule of thumb is that 5g at the butt end is roughly 1 swingweight point, so it's likely that there's a fair chunk of weight in that insert over and above what there should be were the shaft untrimmed.

My experience is that swingweight is more noticable to the player than static weight when things are amiss, and I've certainly played clubs previously that weren't bang on in terms of static weight progression, but were in terms of swingweight. I'm relatively fussy with such things and, hand on heart, I couldn't tell a difference once I'd slapped some lead tape on and got the swingweights right.

One option that will make a slight difference is to use a lighter insert, possibly something like aluminium. It won't totally solve the problem, but it will help matters as it's slightly lighter than steel (which I assume is in the club). The PX shafts are relatively light though - so that option is going to be less effective than it would be with a heavier shaft.

By all means try to find a replacement shaft (and an above poster made a good suggestion regarding looking for an older demo club to use as a donor) but in the meantime give things a go with a bit of extra headweight added either by lead tape or by tip weighting. As I say, I've played with clubs that have been a bit off in terms of static weight and I couldn't discern any difference in feel with relatively minor discrepancies. As the saying goes: Your results may vary, but it's woth a try and is a better option than butchering a 2 iron shaft.

I feel your pain mate. I've done the same thing once in the past whilst waffling on about girls instead of concentrating on what I was doing with my lob wedge, and it was a true forehead-slapping moment.

I know it's no consolation, but I was one of many people who predicted potential problems when they stopped making the satin shafts.

Thanks for the post. The extension I used is made out of aluminum.....bought it from Golfsmith.

I don't plan on going the lead tape route as I like the look of my beautiful J33CB heads. That was the reason I am planning on going the cork and lead powder method.

But I will keep my eyes open for a demo 6 iron with the Project X satin 6.5....keeping my fingers crossed.

Just as an aside, have you dry-weighed the component parts?

Just doing a quick bit of mental arithmetic, it seems a long way out of kilter for a 1" aluminium extension. Obviously I haven't got the club in my hands, but I would think there's at least a chance the head may be a bit light. If that's the case, it's all to the good when you start adding any tip weight as you're essentially correcting the weight issue along with the swingweight problem.

No I haven't dry weighted anything. I will probably not worry about the 6 iron shaft. Just get all the SW's together and go from there. If I feel a difference then I will move on to getting a new shaft. There is a guy that is stuck at the top in the BST section that sells individual Sating Project X shafts. But they seem a bit on the expensive side
