They are not close to one another...however, given a choice, having played both, SAWGRASS without a doubt.

 

Ocean Hammock is nice, and right on the ocean. The Ginn resort is fantastic if you are staying there too.

Sawgrass. Its one of the top courses in the world. An iconic course. A lifetime must play. The clubhouse, range and entire experience are also first rate.

 

Your friends will be envious of you playing Sawgrass. No one will care that you played Ocean Hammock.

Ocean Hammock is a great golf experience, but it is not Sawgrass. Play Sawgrass if you can, IMO.

I've played both also and two things to consider when making this choice. In order to play Ocean Hammock you have to stay at the Ginn resort, no way around that. Second TPC Sawgrass is grossly over priced and usually in mediocre condition. I played it last August (pretty fair condition), and again in December (looked like World War III had been fought there). It also is not very fun to play with the exception of 9 & 16-18. Ocean Hammock was in fabulous condition when I played it and it's challenging, but fun. I wouldn't play TPC again unless it was comped or somebody else payed for it.

Have not played ocean hammock ... But did stay and play at TPC Sawgrass two weeks after the Tour players. Place was in GREAT shape. Rough was the thickest I ever played in.

I agree. I played TPC for the first time today, and it was amazing. If you go to the tournament every year like myself, then you tend to appreciated the course more when you play it. I disagree with the above poster that besides 9, 16-18, that the course is boring.

 

Granted we got on for half the cost of what it usually costs, I think its hard to justify $400 for any round of golf, yes, even Pebble.

 

TPC is relentless. It never lets up. Like Augusta National, TV doesn't do the course any justice as far as green undulations. If you aren't on the right tier, you will 3 putt every time!

I played Sawgrass 2 weeks ago - and loved it. Yeah, it's $$$$, but it is certainly worth more than other courses. I found the design of the layout extraordinary , the condition great. I found it pleasant to play - not unrealistically hard - had a great caddy ( Doug Miller I think - nice guy) who gave perfect reads on all greens - never 3 putted, but you have to stay focused.

 

I have played very few courses where I was impressed by the design of each hole, from tee to green as often as on Sawgrass - perhaps a few links courses in Ireland. I thought this was a better 'parkland' course than the Palmer Course at the K Club, another brilliant course (holes 16-18 are awesome there).

 

Definitely a must and in my opinion, much more interesting and challenging to play than Pinehurst #2.

 

Cannot however compare it to Ocean Hammock - which I heard is a nice course. I did play The King and Bear at World Golf VIllage - a very good course, though not in the same category as Sawgrass. Also played blue monster at Doral (other than the tournament that takes place there, not worth the $$ - just another Miami Resort course). In FL, played Innisbrook Copperhead - quite good, TPC Campa, very good and missed playing at Barren Pines near Tampa which is supposed to be top notch......

i agree, tpc sawgrass is a great, must play, but for the price, one time was enough. ocean hammock is a beautiful course without the shots at tpc, but a better place to stay with the wife and kids. to all of you, if you are ever in hilton head you should try to play at long cove, which is private, but i find better than either tpc sawgrass or harbor town.

Definitely Sawgrass. It's a very memorable experience. To this day I still remember most of the golf course.

 

On the other hand Ocean Hammock is a nice course, but, IMO nothing to write home about.

 

Just to contrast, I played Sawgrass back in 1994 and Ocean Hammock in 2005 and I honestly can't remember much about Ocean Hammock (honestly I enjoyed the two courses at the World Golf Village significantly more than Ocean Hammock).
