Ruined Titleist 755's using Naval Jelly?

I just received a set of 755's that had a little bit of rust on them and decided to use some Naval Jelly to remove them. After applying and removing after 5 minutes they no longer have the chrome finish? I did not think that this was possible with just naval jelly. Any insight?

How did 755's rust? They are forged stainless steel. Did you mean the chrome 735's?

Just seen the pics. They look like 755's, but again, there is no way they should rust - if genuine.

Im guessing they rusted from bag chatter and ball impact disrupting the finish.

Whether you bought them new or not, they still have a serial number and should be trackable by Titleist. If legit, they should have no problem making them right for you. Chrome plated irons will not lose their finish with naval jelly, if real.

 

However, they actually look kinda cool in just the one pic posted. Kinda.......Tommy Armour 845ish.

Also, shouldnt there only be one serial number on the 6 iron and not all of them? The set I just got has a serial number on all of the clubs.

 

I wouldnt mind too much if it was even but its too splotchy for my liking.

 

Any idea what sort of charge they would ask for refinishing?

They shouldn't charge you anything if the finish was defective. You should ONLY expect to pay for shipping to them, and that's it.

Again, 755's do not have a chrome finish. You may be confusing it without polished finish maybe. It is possible that the acid content of the naval jelly has attacked the surface of the club and given it and "etched" finish. They could be simply buffed up with an abrasive pad or similar. The problem is how they got to rust in the first place. Did you get them from a reputable source or not? I hope you don't have a counterfeit set, but any reputable dealer should be able to tell you if they're genuine or not.

I've had two sets of 755's, the one I just got and a previous set I've played about 4 months. Both sets have some sort of rusting where bag chatter normally is and some rust on impact marks.

I'm guessing the jelly just had a reaction to the stainless that took off the polish and now the metal is hazy. you can try taking a buffing wheel to see if that brings the shine back up.

Crap stainless steel will rust to some extent.

 

755's are not chromed. IIRC any over-exposure to phosphoric acid is not good for steel of any type.

I think a custom ordered set gets serial numbers on all the irons, while a retail/standard set just gets the 6-iron stamped.

Well it seems as if not all is lost. I set up my bench grinder as seen below and am going through the process of repolishing the irons. So far so good. Once I get to the high shine hopefully I won't be able to tell the difference.

Can tape the "groove area" if you want to keep it satin finish. For a pro look bead blast the face area first, tape, then polish.
