I would like to add swingweight to a driver.

Title says it all...........is there any way to add swingweight w/o using lead tape or removing the shaft and adding tip weights? I also don't want to change to a lighter grip either.

Any help would be appreciated.

You can remove the grip and put tungsten powder down the shaft.

 

That or doing something like hot melting the driver head itself can add weight.

 

How much weight do you need to add to the head?

I want to chop 3/4" off the butt end.

 

However, I'm reluctant to pull the shaft because the feel of the head/shaft combo is ideal now. I've pulled a shaft before, added tip weights and then reinstalled the same shaft but it never had the same feel. I know that sounds crazy but that's why I'm looking for alternative options.

 

Plus, I know chopping 3/4" off will remove approximately 5 swingweights and that's just too much for me.

tungsten in graphite.....I wouldn't recommend. Not for that much weight anyway.

Graphite has thicker walls than steel and therefore - less space for the powder...meaning that adding enough weight in powder would make the powder fill above the non-flexing shaft tip, and into the portion of the shaft that flexes. That equals problems.

 

Not many other options.

 

This would be a perfect situation for my new invention - the heavy ferrule! Yes - you cut your plastic ferrule off, and install (in two halves) my tour issue heavy tungsten heavy ferrule!

 

Why not lead tape? Easy - cheap - removable....

The only reason that someone wouldn't go that route would be for aesthetics.

 

Oh! How about removing all the paintfill and then mixing tungsten powder in with paint and re-filling it with "heavy paint".

Another new invention!

If you're not willing to alter any of the club parts, you're left with lead tape. Either that or leave the headcover on when you swing.

Aesthetics aside, lead tape is the easiest, fastest and least permanent fix to this problem. If it doesn't work, then you rip the tape off. Simple as that. You don't have to put it anywhere you can see it.

The only hotmelting process that I'm familiar with involves removing the shaft and that's not something that I want to do.

That heavy ferrule is actually a pretty good idea. I'm staring across the room at my little lathe and thinking that it would be pretty easy to make some out of aluminum or steel. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........ and you could offer upgraded finishes like polished, satin, oil can, black oxide, annodizing.......great idea!
