Hooking & Overspinning Driver & 3W

I currently play a D1 with a stiff Proto VS 65 and a Burner 3w with 50g stock stiff shafts. I like both heads a lot (especially the 3w) but find myself occassionally hooking (really bad) when I go after one. I struggle with tempo, and have a very long across the line (Daly-like) swing, w/ a driver SS of 108-110. My other issue is that I hit both very high rarely getting any roll. Talking 280 carry with the driver and 5 yards of roll under normal conditions.

 

I know I should get fitted properly, but looking for some general guidance first, so that I may tinker / demo a little on my own to get a sense of things.

 

I believe I need: heavier shafts: 73-75g in the driver and 80g in the 3 woods, both in X-flex. Ultimately, I need a lower flight and less spin.

before i'd tinker i'd first get with a swing coach to find out if its the club set-up, or the swing thats causing your issues. a poor club set up will cause your ball to balloon and fade/draw, but it wont cause you to hook. a change in clubhead and shaft will help to assuage spin and launch angle irregularities, but not enough to overcome a swing flaw. a pro will be able to tell you whether youre coming into the ball too steep, or whether you need to change set-ups.

Your shaft weights do seem a bit weedy for your swing speed, especially your 3W. You are pretty much on the money with your assessment of what the shaft weights should be. I don't think you're quite into x-flex speed though.

Two things.

 

If you are wristy with your JD swing, you are in the X Flex range.

 

Most hooks are from having a very flat swing plane. Have someone watch you and see if the shaft is below your shoulders on the takeaway and transition.

I can tell you I am very wristy...and definitely not one to come in too much from the inside. My swing is pretty upright and 2-plane.

I concur, you are very wristy and very much a 2 plane guy. Reshaft and stick to two plane fundies.

A low cost test would be to put a X100 Dynamic Gold (SL if you like) shaft in your 3 wood.... Expensive test would be a 83x Diamana whiteboard.
