There was alot of talk around the Ryder Cup of Anthony Kim's irons. I cant remember if he has them standard length or has them long.

He always chokes down 1/2", learned that way and still does it.

You will find most PGA pros that are 6'3" and above have longer clubs. But the exact specifications are never released.

I'm pretty sure Tiger is standard 1* upright.

I didn't think there were many that play them over standard.

No real reason for wondering...I was just thinking about it and couldn't recall any off the top of my head.

You see MANY ams that play them long or short, but the guys at the most elite level pretty much all play them standard--whether they're 5'8" or 6'5"...kinda odd.

What is standard?

The question is hard to answer as there are different standards for length and lie among the major manufactures. If you look up the standards for each company you will see a difference of .5" in length shown as standard and a 1.5 degrees of lie angle. You will also see differences in loft from one manufacture to another. Lengths of 5 irons typically range from 37.5"-38" and the corresponding lie 60.5-62 degrees. With this in mind the answers of 1/2" over without a standard are meaningless.

Absolutely correct about the standards, like the

Henny Youngman one-liner. "Hows your wife?

and he answers "Compared to who"?

When I get a new set, I'm looking to be at 38.25 on the 5 iron.

With a Ping, thats + 1/2. With a Titleist thats + 1/4.

With Mizuno it depends on which model.

Just so you guys know, adjusting the lie by .75* is equal to adjusting the length by 1/2".... i.e. Tiger being 1* up means his clubs play roughly a half inch longer....

adjusting lie is a great way for a player to affect playing length while not changing swing weight.

Think about what you just said there. It is impossible to change the effective length of a club. However changing the length DOES change the "effective" lie angle! Also every half inch added to a club will change the effective lie angle by 2 degrees not .75*! If you played clubs that were 6 degrees up it does not mean they would play an inch and half long. They would still be "x" length and you would not stand further from the ball just because they were upright. So that means they would play the same length. However if you played clubs an inch and half long they would "effectively" play 6 degrees upright because you would have to stand further from the ball changing the angle that the club sits on the ground.... you catch the drift?

Sorry I suppose being a certified Ping fitter I don't really know what I'm talking about. If you make a club more upright it is very similar to lengthening the club. I'm just telling you exactly what I have learned from Ping. It makes sense considering Tiger being tall and playing upright irons allows him the comfort he needs without messing with the swing weight of the irons.

Absolutely CORRECT!!! Tiger plays 1/4" inch short, not long!! On top of that Nike standard tends to be 1/4" to 1/2" shorter than other companies standard. Ping runs a bit short in comparison to others as well.

Sorry, guess we're gonna have to disagree with each other here--though nobody will know for 100% fact unless they get some crazy a** chance to measure Tiger's 5 iron on their own. Tiger's 5 iron length is 37.75" by all accounts I've ever read. That was the standard length of the MP14 and as we all know, his iron specs are unchanged from those days. That's also the standard for TM's TP line of clubs, Nike's Forged Blades, and many other tour caliber irons.

Unless the great guys on the Nike PGA tour van don't know what they are talking about, his irons are indeed 1/4" short. They have worked with me on a couple of sets and I have seen them make gamers and backups for all of their staffers, so I would be shocked that they would tell me something other than fact.

Do any of the shorter players cut them down or just play standard?

I was told Ian Woosnam plays 2" longer than standard with 2* flat. He is only 5'4"
