Stiffer flex, Higher Torque, Lower Weight shaft in a driver.

My first post ever. Found a lot of good info here. Been really helpful.

I read an article somewhere (but can't find it anymore) that said going with a lighter shaft, in a higher flex, and higher torque can produce longer straighter drives. The example given was a S-flex player going up to an X-flex in a ultra-light weight with higher torque. And the results were longer drives that were in the fairway more consistently.

I forget the details of the article, but the idea has intrigued me, and I want to see what you think. Has anyone tried such an idea before?

I want to give it a try, but I want to see if you think there is any good sense to it.

I have a Bstone J33R 460 9.5 and I purchased a GD Pershing 55X. It specs as follows:
X flex, Wt 62, Tq 4.5, Mid/Hi Kick.
I used to play an NV 65 (my miss was a bad hook, but with the right swing, the ball exploded.)
S flex, Wt 69, Tq 3.5, Lo/Mid kick.

Do you think this will work? Have any of the gurus tried this? I'm not as concerned with feel, just performance.

I tried this and it went horibly wrong.

 

you need to think about

 

- weight

- kick point (high for agressive fast swings)

- torque (low for agreesive fast swings otherwise I feel you reduce smash factor)

- weight (very individual)

 

I did an experiment got a Tour Burmer TP, X-con 5 in extra stiff; i high the ball so high planes were at risk ! (torque 4.5 so no good for me) - waste of money. So light may suit some poople (with clubhead speed below 100 mph) but certainly not agressive swings.

 

My perfect shaft (at the last custom fit in 2005) was a speeder 757 in stiff flex. (torque 2.5)

 

I sold the TP with the X-con, went for a custom fit and went with a TB TP with a Diamana whiteboard 73x (torque 2.8); this is the equivilent of the speeder 757.

 

We are all different, my swing loads the shaft so moderately heavy is good and lowish torque essential otherwise I have control issues.

 

I really bomb the whiteboard with a really good smash factor and clubhead speed is higher than ever, I also love the whiteboard as I can control the trajectory producing high or very low drives as required.

 

People like Joe Kwok are bang on, you need to get on a launch monitor and get some figures.

Thanks for the info. Can you, or anyone actually, explain the affect of low or high torque on the ball? How does it reduce smash factor? Does it affect feel, playability? Is it for slower swings?
