how to determine headweight needed based on weights of other component

Hey, I'm nearly about to start my first iron reshaft build. After a long day of searching in the forums I feel I'm pretty prepared for every step but swingweighting. If someone has the time, could they please help me out with my question?

Given I have:

Shafts: Standard Length

Grips: 46 g

Shafts: 125 g

Given this information, can the headweight needed to achieve a D3 swingweight be determined? If so is there a formula for finding it?

SW in gram-inches = club_weight_in_grams x (Balance_point - 14).

Each SW increment corresponds to 50 g-in with the D0 reference at 6050. For example:

 

D0 = 6050 g-in

D1 = 6100 g-in

D2 = 6150 g-in etc.

 

All you need is a gram scale and a way to measure the balance point of the club. The BP is measured from the end of the grip."

 

Once you have that, then you can refer to the "swingweight rules post" on the first page of this forum to make adjustments.

The easiest thing to do is build the clubs, find a swingweight scale and some lead tape...and have some fun. Trying to pre-calculate swingweight and build is a tedius, frustrating process that very rarely yields the results intended. Not every shaft is going to have the same weight or balance point and not every head is going to have an equal weight increment between it and the next head in progression...this is just a side effect of mass production.

 

Just a thought...why automatically pick D3? not all swingweight scales read the same. My recommendation is to build the six iron and take it to the range, add lead tape until the feel and performance are to your liking, measure that club on a swingweight scale, and then build other irons from there (using the same scale)

Get a good gram scale and dont rely on just the manufactureing specs if you dont have a SW scale. Most manufactures have ok quality controle but +/- 2 grams can yield a 4 gram swing in headweight per club head and you end up with fluctuating swingsweights through the set. You'll also be tip and but trimming yor shafts making them heavier as you go up in club heads. Good luck and tell the wife from here it only gets more expensive.
