Planning golf trip in March Williamsburg, VA

Course Ideas??
We are planning a golf trip this March to Williamsburg, Virginia and this is a tentative schedule. Do you have any other recommendations?

Saturday March 21st: 36 holes Brickshire Golf Course
Sunday March 22nd: 36 holes Colonial Heritage
Monday March 23rd: 18 holes Stonehouse 18 holes at Royal New Kent
Tuesday March 24th: 36 holes Spring Creek Golf Course (on the way home)

We have been here 3 years ago..didn't care for Golden Horseshoe (both courses) I see many of you love it but every hole seemed repetitive. Played Kingsmill (Plantation and Woods) River course was closed...nothing special AND WAY OVERPRICED. The river looks great but were not spending $275 for 36 holes and replay here. We like to play challenging courses but don't like to break the bank on rates. We usually just stay at a basic hotel eat on a economy budget...here for golf. Any thoughts on this...would you play one of these on a different day? Different courses?? Would you avoid any of these? Thanks for help.

I guess they missed the part where you said you did'nt like the Golden Horseshoe courses...(although I find that difficult to wrap my mind around!)

Sounds like you are playing some of the more fun courses in the area. You might want to check out Williamsburg National, and Kiskiack.

Brickshire is a nice track with a couple of great par 5's, and when you are done there, see if anything is running at the horse track next door. (Colonial Downs)

I would avoid Colonial if I was you. Played there recently and it was pathetic. I wouldn't go back if it was free!

Why? I heard this was awesome??

Yeah, my reply would be to make sure to play Golden Horseshoe- but you said no on that so I don't have a whole lot left to say. :beee: ;)

so my course ideas look unadvised. What do you recommend as 3 days of golf here...I'm set with Spring Creek on Tuesday (is this any good)?

What would your itinerary be (at least 36 day)?

Mon

I can't tell you anything about Spring Creek, never played there. I don't see anything wrong with your other choices, except 36 at Colonial Heritage may be a bit much.

Play the Colonial while you are in town, they have a special rate until March 31 I think. Fords' Colony is a possibility, but fairly expensive, and I've never played there when the round took less than 5 hours due to the number of players on the courses. All of the Kingsmill courses are overrated and overpriced in my opinion.

Not really that many nice courses in Newport News or Hampton, but you might consider a day trip to Va. Beach.

Spring Creek is a solid setup with great conditioning. I think you will enjoy it as much as any of the other courses you are playing.

+1 to the two above - good moves going with Brickshire, Fords Colony and Royal New Kent. Agree with you that the Kinsmill courses other than River are not worth it. Disagree about the Golden Horseshoe courses.

But you've got a good itinerary there - you'll have a blast.

I used to live in that area, and Royal New Kent is a good course, designed by Mike Stranze (spelling?), and has lots of elevation changes, scrub rough areas, and a few blind shots. The 18th tee shot is up hill, then the next shot is downhill to a penisula green. Hope the wind is calm!

Brickshire also has nice elevation changes, and at least one good, long, uphill par three.

Both are excellent courses to play.

I personally would not recommend Stonehouse. It seemed like blind shot after blind shot and the 10th green needs a clown's mouth, windmill and any other mini golf obstacle. On the trip I did, it was probably my least favorite course. I was supposed to play New Kent the same day, but when I was told that it was similar to Stonehouse I decided to bag it.

Williamsburg National and Kiskiak are very enjoyable courses as is the River course at Kingsmill. I also liked Brickshire.

I appreciate all the feedback on this...I have one more questions on Ford's Colony. Which 2 of the 3 courses do you suggest and why? We usually play the tips and love a great layout. The 3 courses are Blackheath, Marsh Hawk, and Blue Heron. We will definitely play 36 maybe 18 more depending on time, light, and weather. Which 2 would you definitely play...THANKS!

  • 2 months later...

I squeezed in 18 at Ford's Colony Blue Heron a couple of weeks ago. Great course and in great shape for this time of year. Not too bad on price either...I'll pay 40 bucks to play that caliber course anytime of year. The accomodations were great too. My wife and I enjoyed the pool and spa which were open til 10pm.

Please reply once you've played with your thoughts. I was thinking of doing a second yearly trip (first is in Myrtle Beach) in Williamsburg.

/ What's in my bag is more than meets the eye /
