Grinded area won't color?

I have a CG 10 wedge (dark finish - Black Pearl?) that I'm using for my first attempt at flaming. Started by sanding off the stock finish. Then I gave it an M grind. "Prepped" it with a scotchbrite wheel, followed by cloth to give it a nice polished look everywhere. Wiped it down with acetone before heating.
I used a propane torch for the heating.. probably 25 or so minutes. Got a nice golden tone with a variety of colors in spots, except on the area I grinded. I concentrated the torch in one area for about 5 minutes and couldn't get any color at all. Just a dull gray. I'm not too familiar with metals, so what am I missing? Thanks for any input!

What you'll have happening is the chrome will discolour quickly, but the bare steel will require a lot more heat to discolour. Chances are you're not going to get the bare steel to the same tone as the chrome.

actually sounds like you used to much heat, the last color in the spectrum is dull grey before it starts getting red hot. sand it all back down again and this time put it in the oven at 500* for about 25 min.

So I re-sanded, only difference is this time I didn't polish. I figured I better post now before putting the head in the oven, so I don't have to just repeat the process again. Here are 2 pics showing the area that was grinded. After rinsing off the head with water, it's clearly different than the rest of the head (this is the same area that didn't color after the first heating attempt). Will I just be wasting my time trying to heat again?

25 minutes? That is really long. I usually take 5 to maybe 10. After about 5 minutes I get a nice blue. Anything more than 15 and it turns grey. Have never gotten red. I would imagine that would take a while. I will experiment with the oven tomorrow.

black pearl? they look like nickel. your not going to get a uniform finish because of the plating.

Yeah I was guessing on the finish. I don't use/know much about Cleveland wedges and the head is just for me to experiment. Are you saying the plating is actually pretty thick and only the grinding was enough to take it off and get to the raw steel?

 

Edit: Would the following scale apply for colors? Would an oil can finish give a more uniform look rather than just flaming?

CG10 black pearl has more like two layers of finish.

There is another chrome underneath black chrome.

By looking at your pictures, I see second shiny layer that does not change color by heating.

based on the pictures you are out of luck. what you need to do is remove all of the plating or just give up and buy another. also to chemically remove the finish is not recomended and you will find by searching this.
