Clarification of OB and Water rules

Gah!

Can anyone tell me what exactly you do when you hit a water hazard, or OB? Do you re hit from where you took the shot, do you take a drop, where do you take a drop, how many stroke penalty, etc. I have a rule book, but it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

If you hit it OB you're gonna have to reload. (ie hit from the spot where ur divot is :D)

 

If you hit it in a hazard there are a couple of options. This depends on whether it is a water hazard or lateral hazard...often defined by yellow and red stakes respectively.

 

Water hazard has fewer options. You can either rehit from where u were before or drop on a line between where ur ball crossed into the hazard and the pin

 

Lateral hazard has the same options with the additional option to use two clublengths from the point that it entered and no closer the hole...and u can do that on the opposite side of the hazard if possible (again no closer the hole)

So... if I hit my tee shot into a lateral hazard off the tee, and on the other side of the lake (across from the tee bow) there is a drop area, I drop the ball there, take a 2 stroke penalty, and hit my 4th shot?

1 stroke penalty for hitting into a hazard. You'd be hitting 3.

 

It is a 2 stroke penalty for OB

Oh boy. You need to go read rules 26 and 27. It's all there. You are just going to get confused by incorrect information any other way. Spend a little time and you'll get it.

OB-You ALWAYS rehit from your original position, with a 1 stroke penalty. Otherwise known as stroke and distance. I don't know where people are getting a 2 shot penalty from. If you hit your tee ball OB, you rehit, which will be your 3rd shot.

cos it works out to be a two stroke penalty :P. the stroke and distance puts u back hitting 4 once u get down there instead of 2 if u hadn't hit it out :P

No offense, but that's just not the correct way to be thinking about it. Out of bounds is a one stroke penalty and you have to play again from where you played the stroke that went OB. There's no second penalty stroke.

 

Laterals are generally marked red, and here you get the added option of a two club length drop.

 

Yellow hazards, your choices are take a penalty and hit from the previous spot, or drop along a line that connects back from where the ball entered the hazard and the hole.

 

Like was said above, just reread Rules 26 and 27, and maybe be looking at a hole diagram with both a lateral and regular water hazard on it.
