Welding stamps on a putter

Recommended Posts

so, i'm looking to sort of create a custom putter. i'm looking for an anser 4 type putter, but i'm not super keen on welded necks, so i'm thinking to take a oem putter and have it refinished.

the thing is, it has to look very, very plain. so, i'd like to get something like an anser 4 or newport 2.5 and have it refinished. i'm thinking to have all the stamps welded in and then a new finish put on it.

does anyone see any potential problems with this plan? will the welding take and look like the club was never stamped or will the old stamps show through? anyone else done something like this? could i use an anser 4? can you put a different finish over that easily?

any recommendations as to whom to have do this refinish?

thanks.

If you're willing to spend the money on a Cameron and pay to completely deface and refinish it, just to get your desired results...why don't you consider just having one made how you'd like it from Byron, C&L, Slighter, Machine, Sunset Beach, etc.?

You can have them very clean looking, just needs to have the company name on it somewhere. That way it can be built to your specs as well, weight, loft, lie, and so on.

Just a thought.

But to answer your question, yeah I guess you could weld in lettering and have some type of finish applied over it.

i've looked into it, but i've not found one that's gonna work. first, a company name is a deal breaker for me. i've found someone from your list that will do it without a name, but as i mentioned, i'm not particularly found of welded necks, and that's what they'd have to do. additionally, i'd prefer something with a head weight around 330 and most of those are 350ish, so they'd have to take off 20 grams or so.

i'm thinking to do this with a cameron that's in decent but not great shape, so it won't cost too much. as part of the refinish, they'll be able to get it into better shape. i'd actually prefer to just use an anser 4, and that'd be even cheaper. but, given the cost of the putter and the refinish, i'd expect it to be a bit cheaper than a custom one anyway. for what it's worth, i would be willing to pay more for a custom one, if it met the other criteria.

if anybody knows of a company doing custom putters that offers a non-welded neck like this, by all means, let me know.

Unless you can find a company with a model in their current line-up the way you want it, you are either looking at a welded neck or a 1-off handmade. A one-off handmade is going to range from 1000 to 2000. I have not found many out there that have an extremely long plumber's neck.

I cannot imagine anyone on that list doing it without their company name on it, but they may I can see a non paintfilled name easily though. Machine has interchangeable hosels and I am sure they could do the neck you want but I imagine they will not do it without their company name.

Choepner(sp?) is the Machine rep here and I am sure he can tell you if Machine can do what you are looking for and with his extensive knowledge of all putter companies might be able to point you at another that could do it.

A lot of putter refinishers won't weld stampings when refinishing. People try to pass them off as tour putters later.

Not saying that's what your intention is, but it's been done in the past.

Just as information, I agree with stage. When I was doing lots of old Spalding restorations over the past year or two, I had several guys wanting to know if I would weld in everything as part of the refinishing. I even had one bold enough to ask if I would weld everything in and go so far as to stamp in things more in line with a Mills handmade. I of course declined and told the person asking that this would be in this case both, immoral and illegal. I often shared these types of request with both David Mills and Jay Green with names withheld of course, just if for nothing else but to show I would not step over this line. I had a couple of the same request for this type of work on other brands as well which I of course refused as well.

I know your intentions may be different in this case, but I'm not sure how many guys will be willing to do what you are asking. Just food for thought if you are told no at some point.
