From green side bunker to water hazard

Playing the other day with some buddies we had a situation we weren't sure on. My buddy hit his tee shot in a green side bunker on a par 3 surrounded by water. On his 2nd shot he sculled it out of the bunker and one hoped it into the lake. The lake was marked yellow.
He took his drop where the ball entered the water hazard no closer to the hole. My question is should he have had to drop the ball back in the sand trap? Does it matter if the water was marked red or yellow?

If it were red staked, he could have dropped within 2 club lengths no closer to the hole but with yellow stakes he would have had to drop on the opposite side of the hazard or played another from the original spot in the bunker.

He did just fine.

Yellow stakes mean you'll have to drop on the side of the water where your ball INITIALLY crossed the hazard. While red stakes allow you to drop where the ball LAST crossed the hazard line.

As he clearly was already on the greenside of the hazard (with water being all around) he was allowed to drop the ball within two clublengths from where the ball entered the hazard.

Of course he could have elected to drop in the bunker and play from the same spot as his last shot.

If it was marked yellow than he did not proceed correctly and should add an additional 2 stroke penalty for playing from the wrong location. The only two options you have when playing from a yellow staked water hazard are to play a ball as closely as possible from the original point or to keep the point at which the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the hazard the ball may be dropped. You can only use the 2 club length option if it is marked as a lateral water hazard i.e. red stakes or red line.

After reviewing the rule, I stand corrected.

So, better not to putt off the green at #17 at Sawgrass....
