Callaway X22-Tour Irons vs Ping i10 Irons

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm looking at purchasing new irons this season and have narrowed it down to two clubs.

The Ping i10s and the Callaway X22-Tours.

I have hit both clubs and like both of them. The feeling is about the same. There's so many options for shafts that I think both clubs can be customized to fit me.

My questions are:

What are the main differences for those two iron sets?

What are the main similarities for those two iron sets?

What would you recommend?

I am leaning towards the Callaways because I had Big Bertha prior to my current set of Taylor Made Racs.

I am looking for a more penetrating ball flight. I used to need the oversize but my ball striking has improved and now I have a steeper swing.

I've never had Pings, but I've hear great things about them and the customer service.

Any recommendations? Thoughts?

Thanks!

I have never owned any callaway irons, only Ping. If you are talking about the X22 (not pros), then I would say i10s. I love my i10s. I just ordered a set of Scratch irons. Theses Scratch have to be a hellva lot better than my i10s to knck them out of my bag. I just really like the look, small compact head, and ball flight of the i10s.

I have not hit or seen the X22's but I'm guessing the head size and offset, etc. make them alot like all the other X series irons (I could be wrong though). I persona;;y never cared for the X series ( did like some of the pro series though).

Well this is my $.02

I like the X-22 Tours(& bought them), they are great, good feel, accurate, and distance is good, they are forgiving as well, for me it was an easy choice

RYMAIL00,

Off topic, I see you have 2 Ping drivers that were Digitally Lofted. When you requested a specific loft, did/can you request a specific face angle in conjuction with the loft (ie....Ping, I want a ~10.5 head with a face angle ~1 degree open). I understand that a vendor cannot hit both numbers right on but with numerous heads in stock, they should be close.

Also, did you think the Shaft Stabilization benefited the driver? A question I have is by twanging a shaft, how good are the results -vs- a club maker pulling the shaft, spine/flo then reinstalling the shaft.

Thanks!

Did you have them fitted at a Callaway Fitting Centre or with a proshop?

I had them fitted by a good friend of mine at a local shop(he is very good at what he does), I ended up with the X-22 Tours 6.5 PX(non-flighted) 3 degrees upright. These irons are awesome, my shots have never been better

Wow. Great questions. Well honestly I have never used a shaft that has been flowed or spined before. I live in a small town we have a Dicks sporting goods (TM, Callaway, & Cobra for major OEMs). Also we have very, very, very small sop that you can order Titliest, and Ping from. Neither one of these places has he capability. Sorry went off a tangent. Anyways, I cant really compare it to anything. It was $25 so I said what the hell. Now my misses are always HUGE HOOKS! Right now my driver is noy acting to friendly. But my mishits are ALWAYS in play now. I dont know if its the head or shaft, or the combo.

The G10 I have is is 12.1* I bought it off ebay, last spring and used it all year, but hit it to high. Like said before nowhere to demo the clubs. So after I found out true loft of G10, I ordered it lower lofted.

On the face angle I am not sure about the face angle. I am sure Ping WRX can do it for you though. Sorry about the long message.

Also sorry about the thread jack.

I got a fitting done and they recommended the X22 Tours, 6.5 PX, 2 degrees upright.

What I don't understand is that I am a high handicapper (20), but they recommended the X22 Tours over my current Big Bertha irons. They said that swing speed has more to do with the club fitting then handicap. Is this true? So that's why I'm a little gun shy making this purchase.

My handicap fluctuates between 12-14, so I am not a great ball striker by any means. Having said that, I currently play original TM Rac LT's and use to enjoy a set of Ping I3 Blades. While I haven't played either the X22 Tour or the I10, I am also interested in both of these irons, and I wouldn't hesitate to play either one with the correct shaft for my swing. I also played a set of TA 845's for years at over a 15 cap and thought the forgiveness was fine (the I10's and Tours have to be at least as forgiving as the 845's).

Sorry if I'm digressing a bit, but my point is: if you hit your irons decent, I think the X22 Tours or the I10's would be fine for you. I am not a big believer in the benefits of playing "shovels." I've seen tons of skanking shots hit with super game improvement clubs and I'll bet most everybody has. It's not like either of these irons is a tiny forged muscleback. Just my two cents.
