My group quits on "Double Par"

Recommended Posts

Even in money games--a rant about my group
I understand the point of picking up your ball after you get to double-par, when you are a 30 handicap! But my group, who can all shoot in the mid-80's easily insists that double par is "fair" and simply pick their balls up at that point. My problem is that we are usually playing a nassau, and those extra strokes can easily make a difference. We are not playing on a busy course, and it isn't a matter of holding other groups up.

What do you guys think? I've brought up my objection before, but I'm "that guy" who just insists that everyone plays by the rules.

Side rant: members of my group frequently ask me for rulings when we are on the course since they are completely ignorant about where to drop, how to drop, OB, relief, etc... and then ARGUE with me about the ruling, or get mad at me because I don't tell them what they want to hear.

I was complaining about my current, at that time, girlfriend to an older wiser mentor of mine...

She does this & that....and she makes me do this & that....and she won't do that other thing....

His reply: Go get yourself a different girlfriend, son!

Trade out that old group for one that plays by the rules.

Or I guess you have the nuts using medal and you don't want to switch to match??

I'm exactly not sure what this means, but if you are asking if I can putt, then yes I can and some of the other guys not so much.

We actually have a nassau running AND a match play bet running at the same time. I'm fine with the match play gimmies, but the nassau is based on the total scores.

Well...you ARE 'That Guy', at least as far as your playing group is concerned, and I doubt you'll change their minds.

Legitimate or not, your partners aren't going to be really happy about your making them sweat out a 4 footer, for an '11' on a par 5, to put money in your pocket.

much diffrent trading out a GF than a group of golfing buddies. GF come and go but golf buddies can last forever...which may be a good or bad thing depending on your group!

I understand the importance of picking up if course play is heavy and or members are hitting it a bit wild; but if that is NOT the case then picking up at +2 is wrong for a few reasons. I can't help but wonder what members of your group are posting too; vanity caps???

If they ask for the rules then tell them.. but if they don't I would NOT volunteer; that's how you get the label "that guy".

A few times per year I play with a group that have their own interpretation of the rules. I play by the rules while their pickup rule is double par or when frustration occurs; All but one plays to indexes over 15. Great group of guys so I overlook their rules. :D

First let me clarify that double-par = 6, 8, or 10 (not +2)

These guys don't keep handicaps, so score control is not an issue. Neither is ESC.

We do not play Nassau match play, we play straight up stroke play so you can see how picking up will give someone a huge advantage for their total score (rather than taking an 11 or 12 for example)

Then isn't the fact they haven't holed out mean you win the bet every time since they don't have an official score to post? You've posted the lower 18 hole score. They've posted their 16 hole score plus the strokes they took on the other holes before they picked up, but it's not a real score.

Claim the win next time on that basis alone. Withhold your contribution to any pot. It will stop.

I don't know what else to tell you. Failing that, either stop playing with them for money, or stop playing with them.

Other than a full field stroke tournament, recording an 11 on a hole is ridiculous, unless you play a 5 hour round. Agree on a maximum score or play match or another points format like 9s, Wolf or Umbrella.
