I was glad he won. I like to see guys win who aren't over-powering hitters, but are great ball strikers and can consistenly put the ball in the fairway.

I also loved his response, after the 3rd round, regarding the whole Ames/Tiger controversy. He responded perfectly and said that the media blew the whole thing up and that Tiger is #1 and that Tiger has won 10 majors by the age of 30, whereas he is just trying to appear in 10 before he reaches 50.....pointing out that his comment on Tigers swing was in no way meant to make himself appear superior in any way.

I thought it very ironic that Ames won at Sawgrass. In an interview in Golf Magazine (I think) shortly after the 2004 PGA Championship, Ames ripped Whistling Straits and Pete Dye, saying something to the effect that the whole course was a complete joke, it wasn't even a golf course and why would they hold a top-level event there. Funny that he wins at another Dye course with the same intimidating design.

people will remeber that more than that he won the PLAYER'S CHAMP

Not very classy mate.... Ames could have shot even par and won the thing, and I was worried he would blow up after 10, but he came back with 3 birdies, an eagle, the best two putt ever on 17 and played 18 as well as he could have. AND, 10 may have been a birdie had a gust of wind not made that shot come up short and plug in the bunker. I honestly couldn't believe how well Ames was playing and I was in awe shot after shot. He played a perfect round of golf. He beat the next best round of the day by 2 SHOTS WITH A DOUBLE BOGEY!!!

Don't forget, the guy had Vijay, Ernie, and Sergio all chasing him when he started out that day. That's enough to make a lot of guys restless. However, he slept on the lead and came out guns blazing. He made no mistakes and played great golf. Can't ask for much else other than that.

I'm not going to say I'm his biggest fan. He may speak his mind which is fine; but from what I saw in his press conference, I don't think he's particularly respectful to his other competitors. However, he deserved to win this tournament. No one handed it to him, he went out and won it and you've got to respect that.

he wil be remebered for his 9&8 loss, not his win at the players. I remind you that the mass will remeber more about someone's emarassing moment rather than a one of success.

I, for one, will remember that he suffered the 9&8 loss, which I'm sure was quite embarassing, then not only did it not send him into a career ending colapse, but he went on just a month later to win one of the most prestigious events in golf against the strongest field in golf, with a phenomenal final round.

That to me says a lot about his mental toughness.

I've followed Ames at a few tourny's over the past few years, and can tell you that he is a great ball striker. It was awesome to watch him and his Bro/Caddy go for a walk in the park Sun afternoon. How great a feeling would that have been. That was the true definition of being on "autopilot". No one will remember a 9&8 loss to Tiger. If he lost 9&8 to Corey Pavin, maybe. And thats not knocking Corey.......

everyone will remember because he made a fool of him self with the comment and i dont care how low of a blow it is i styill say naaa naaa 9&8 dont bite off more than you can chew.

Something must be said,

Life goes on (winning the Player's isn't bad). He didn't roll over after that one did he? At least he has the balls to mix it up a little bit. I commend him fully for doing that, embarrasing himself, and then coming out to win the Player's by 7 strokes. You can't name very many who have the will power to do that.

Ames definately made a mistake with that comment. But we all make mistakes, so get over it.

After that 9&8 match Tiger didn't end up winning the event anyway, so who really cares?

Also, Ames beat Tiger at the Players by 15 strokes. That's quite a margin.

Good point about the difference Ames beat Tiger by.

I thought the media was WAY too hard on him. What he said wasn't that bad at all. I saw that interview that night on golf central and didn't think a thing about it until the next day when headlines said, "Ames calls out Woods." I remember thinking to myself, "Did I miss something in the last 24 hours???"

It's not like he called Tiger a chump who can't hit the broad side of a barn. He said, "Anything can happen the way he's hitting the ball, it's incredible he shoots the scores he does" Somehow, his compliment towards Tiger got turned into the shot heard round the world. All of a sudden he's calling Tiger's swing change into question and insulting Hank Haney, etc. . . . I don't think anyone here would compare Tiger with Fred Funk in a straightest driver contest . . .

What is Ames supposed to do? Say, Oh well I'm playing Tiger tomorrow so I might as well not show up?

Like someone said earlier, Mchael Jordan used to pretend his opponents said insulting things about him to get up for big games. Tiger didn't have to pretend during the match play since the media did it for him.

Don't get me wrong, Ames is a smug smart #!@, and I'm not his biggest fan. However, he shouldn't have been raked over the coals by the media for what he said about Tiger IMHO.
