Ball for high handicapper

Overwhelmed...

I played my first round ever a month ago in NV (played wolf creek and the badlands, both of which ate my lunch and laughed at me) and now I'm hooked! Luckily both courses are nice enough that I could console myself with the beautiful views...

I did some research and hit some clubs and bought what I hope are good clubs for my skill level. I took a few lessons, and went back on the course yesterday, shot a 92 (which is a hge improvement, trust me)! I did so with some Cally Diablo overruns I got for $18/dozen. Are these balls any good? My swing speed is 98-102 depending on how much coffee I had that day. Distance isn't my primary concern (I was hitting 250-275yds yesterday) but accuracy is. From 100yds in I couldn't have been closer if I had thrown the ball so I'm pleased with that, but off the tee I'm all over the place.

Am I naive to think that a ball can make a difference for me at my skill level? Are there balls that can help me keep the ball in the fairway even though my swing isn't consistent? Or should I be playing the balls in the fishnet bags at the local outlet until everything else falls into place?

I typically score in the high 80s to high 90s and love the Diablo. It is striaght off the tee and has a nice feel. I have naturally high ball flight so the lower spin is not difficult to manage on approachs shots. They will also run out on chips, but this is easy enough to account for.

Those diablo balls are very good balls. If you get a chance try out the bridgestone e6+ and e7+. One of them (can't remember which) is designed to correct a hook or slice and keep the ball on a straighter line. They are only like $27 a dozen which isnt too bad if they keep your ball out of the woods or the water

Its really not going to make a huge difference at this point unless it is the completly wrong fit.

I think most lower compression balls out there now would do the trick.

Yea, the e6+ is one of the balls that was on my radar. It's supposed to help suppress side spin, but I'm not sure what kind of effect that has on shorter shots. The Diablos were pretty reasonable at staying where I wanted them on the greens so I wonder if the e6+ will be as good?

What is considered lower compression, and how do I find that information for each ball? I haven't seen it listed on any sleeves or on any retail websites...

The wilson zip is a great low compression ball. In fact it is a zero compression ball! It flies off of irons and isnt bad off of the driver or woods either. It is the softest ball I have ever played. Worth a shot for $20/dozen

Honestly, at your stage in the game, just get a low priced 2 piece ball, surlyn type of cover, and you will be fine.

You will be losing them pretty rapidly and won't be too stressed with a low cost ball.

Your friends right now are low price, low spin, and durabilty.

I bought a handful of the Diablo logo overruns at GG a few weeks back for like a buck a ball. I was surprised how much I liked for low price two piece ball. I don't think you will do that much better for that price and low spin. As someone mentioned the E6 is also low spin.

Also let me add and instructor told me this once and I believe it makes since. For the people who say a ball will eliminate sidespin that's just plain wrong. A ball is can be low spin, but it's not the ball that is spinning sideways, its the face of the club at impact and swing path that is creating spin. If I've gotten and passed on incorrect info, I hope someone like Iteach will correct me.

Yeah...until you feel comfortable that you are not going to lose a dozen balls per round, like me, go cheaper with less spin. The Srixon AD333 is a fantastic ball try. Soft, good spin, flies good into the wind, straight, and cheap. Most stores have a sale right now for 2 dozen for $25.

I was literally shocked by how good this ball was this past weekend. It's now my cheap ball of choice. Cheap in price but definitely not in quality. Even when the sale is over, lostgolfballs.com sells AAAA for $9 a dozen.

good ball for a good deal is the PRECPT LADDIE.

I bought a dozen for pretty cheap (18 bucks?). they 'bite' on the green with approach shots, but don't spin back (like a premium or tour ball)

previously i had played pro V1 or NXTs. I made the switch while i keep working on my swing accuracy. i think that they stay on line a little bit better.

IMO they play pretty similar to DT SOLO which i really liked when they were putting those out.
