high launch/low spin vs. mid launch/mid spin

15*/2400 rpm vs. 13*/3000 rpm

i'm getting diferent opinions on ideal launch and spin. assuming a 150 ball speed, some want the 13*/3000 rpm and now i am seeing some think its better for a 15*/2400 rpm.

i am just curious what others opinions are of this.

i can see both good. seems the wind would affect a ball with less spin less than with more spin. at th same time the higher trajectory would be more of a problem than a lower trajectory

A friend of mine just picked up a hi-bore, grafalloy blue stiff. We played 9 yesterday evening and he had his old driver in the bag. He hit two on just about every driving hole, one with the hi-bore and another with his old 905T. The 905T launched lower every time, and the hi-bore hit super high flat bombs that seemed to run out. I kept waiting for the time when the hibore would have outdriven the 905 by 30 yards because seeing balls hit that high and hard is just damn impressive.

 

However, when we got up to the balls, they were within 10 yards of eachother. Downwind, into the wind, crosswind it made no difference. Similar swings produced similar results.

 

I think it's just two different ways of getting ot the same destination. Either way you go, your numbers are optimized.

 

However, one benefit I see to the low spin route for high spin players is the ability to play a higer spin ball (V1, B330S, etc) and keep spin down on tee shots while still keeping lots of spin into and around the greens.

i'm not sure which is better, but i would guess the high launch low spin. A good example of this would be comparing Bubba Watson's driving distance to Tiger Woods. Tiger's swing speed is actually higher than Bubba's but Bubba hits it much further. Why? Bubba's launch angle is 16* and has low spin, mid 2000's i think. Where as tiger has a launch angle of around 14* and spin is in the high 2000's. Even though with their swing speed most charts recommend a launch angle of 12 degrees or so. Plus high launch, low spin has the benefit of running out after the ball hits.

Couldn't agree more. It just depends which ball flight suits your eye. You pays your money, you takes your choice. I personally prefer the high launch, low spin version, as it hits the ground running faster and is less affected by side and head winds.

Without a doubt, go with the high lauch , low spin. Its the way to go.

The actual height of the flight is not really the main factor that affects how wind influences distance. It is much more a question of spin. With high launch, low spin, the ball gets up quickly and then flattens out. With high spin, the ball has a tendency to "hover" at the peak of its flight and can then be carried by the wind.
