How to make it last 18 holes....?

I know there is another thread with battery issues/suggestions intermixed in with a general review of the application, but I figured some of us would like a discussion dedicated on the battery issue so we won't have to flip through 150+ replies to find what we want.


I purchased the Golfshot GPS for the iPhone and absolutely love the app, when it is up and running. I am faced with the problem of never once being able to finish 18 holes with it. I've read through a lot of the advice in the general thread but could not get the battery to last longer than 3 hours.

Below are the things I've done to maximize battery

1) Turn off Wifi
2) Set all notifications to off
3) Turn off Bluetooth
4) Turn off 3G
5) Utilize the "Power Save Mode" within Golfshot between strokes.

Are there anything else I can try? :)

Anyone else find the "Power Save Mode" within Golfshot to be pretty useless in terms of convserving battery? My screen never really dims when I activate the "Power Save Mode" making me feel like I'm not really conserving any battery?

I got a Kensington portable battery to clip on the bottom of the phone. Although, I have not played enough holes to try it though. I normally play 7-9 holes in the evenings. Will try it next week in an 18 hole tournament.

The only things I have turned off on mine are Bluetooth and WiFi and I have been able to play a full 18 holes with 20% of the battery left. I also allow my phone to lock after I get my yardage while I'm making my shot. I did buy a Mophie Juice pack that is very nice because now I can play a round of golf in the morning and not have to charge my phone to make it through the rest of the day.

I absolutely love GolfShot GPS.

I guess I'm lucky, I have no issues with the battery. The only thing I do is turn off the 3G and Bluetooth. I leave the WiFi on. The other thing I do is leave the screen on for only 1 min. It's a hassle sometimes cuz I'm always turning it back on, but it does save on the battery bigtime. The other thing to remember is to start your round with a fully charged battery.

If you have a 3GS, that battery is notorious for losing a charge really quickly. The older 3G's seem to do better with battery life. Also, if the phone gets really warm, battery life tends to deplete faster.

Have you updated the iPhone OS to 3.1? I noticed better battery life in normal (non-GS) usage after the update, though I was able to go an entire round comfortably both before and after the update. One thing, since I've only used GS on a familiar course, I've never used the aerial view during the round, just the GPS for yardages. That may make a significant difference in battery use.

How do you turn the screen off without losing your GPS location?

Do you 1) Utilize the "power save mode" within Golfshot? or do you 2) utilize the screen lock that's built into the iphone?

As this thread is nearly 4 years old, I'm not sure the same issues remain with battery life. Unless you are using an older iPhone. My iPhone 3S battery was drained by GolfShot, but once I switched to the iPhone 4S I have not had any issues with 18 holes - usually >50% battery life left (after doing the normal, turn off WiFi, notifications, etc.).

Thanks I used it yesterday for first time and drained quite quick, but that was with me downloading all the courses while I was there, will try again tomorrow with less brightness and no wifi and see how I get on great app though
