905R without acoustic plug

I guess the acoustic plug in the 905Rs really does impact the sound of the driver at impact. I noticed a guy two stalls down from me that had a very loud almost broken sounding 905R. More like a broken china dish sound rather than a high pitched Cobra type sound. I asked him what was wrong with his driver and he said he was "experimenting" with making it sound "better". He didn't like the way it sounded as received so he started messing with it. First he drilled a pilot hole in the aluminum plug in the rubber at the back of the sole. That didn't sound any better so he decided on a bigger hole, so out came the bigger drill. That had too much torque required to drill the bigger hole so the whole aluminum plug started turning and finally came out. He didn't like that sound either so he started burning and digging the rubber out. He thinks this now sounds a little better and certainly is un Titleist like in its noise. Suprisingly after removing all that stuff the swingweight remained D3 so that rubber and aluminum must have weighed next to nothing.

I think he was trying a gradual approach rather than take it out totally (which eventually wound up happening). Looking for the ideal "sound". I think he planned on at least two different hole sizes but the rubber wasn't strong enough to hold anything but a small pilot hole. He had some bucks in this club with a Diamana shaft to boot. Anyway he likes it fine (the new sound just strange) but now needs to find a way to plug the hole which does go into the head---not the big hole but a smallish one---maybe a result of his drilling the pilot hole the first time.

He got me intriqued so I bought a 7.5 905R with an X NV today and started my own surgery (won't be the first non tradeable-in club I've got :golfer: ). I only went with drilling a small hole in the aluminum plug---results great sound and feedback for on center and off center hits. Driver still doesn't go anywhere distance wise compared to 7 or 8 others but it now sounds great---very un Titleist like..
