Club Length

6'4" Player has a quick question.

WRX,

I just got a set of Taylormade MB's and have noticed something is off with my distances with my new clubs. So I took out my buddy's 8 iron(who is 5' 10") and my 8 and noticed my club was a half inch shorter!!!! I know at player of my height has got to have longer clubs right??? My wrist are about 38 inches from the floor. What lenght do other taller players have in irons(meaning .5 over/ 1 inch over)? I think I may need to get them bent a degree or 2 upright as well. I really think the lenght of my short clubs are leading to swing problems!

Please help.

I'm 6'4 and I play irons 3/4 of an inch longer than standard with 3 degrees uprite. Works great for me but I would definately get fit because everyone sets up different.

Some sizing information.

 

This is a general guide for iron length. Measure the distance from the main crease of your wrist to the floor

 

• 29-32 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron length of 37 inches

• 33-34 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron length of 37 1/2 inches (standard)

• 35-36 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron length of 38 inches

• 37-38 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron length of 38 1/2 inches

• 39-40 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron length of 39 inches

• 41 or more inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron length of 39 1/2 inches

I am 6'6", and I play irons extended 1". My arms are very long, almost like an orangutang(39 shirt sleeve). Be careful, every inch extended will upright your club about 1*.

Actually, for every 1/2" extended your clubs become 1* upright, an inch extension would be 2* upright.

Im 6`4, 6`5 and I use standard length clubs. My arms are really long though, I wear a 16 1/2 36 37 dress shirts and from fingertip to fingertip measures over 7 feet.

I'm 6'4" with a 38.5" wrist-to-floor measurement and my clubs are +3/4" (38.5" 5I) and 3º upright. There is no standard for lie angles, though, so 3º up on my set might be 2º up or 4º up on a different set. It's usually best to decide on length and then do a dynamic lie fitting.

 

For me, the length issue comes down mostly to deciding how long my wedges can be and still be comfortable. I don't like anything shorter than 36", so I play my irons +3/4". I've read about some taller players preferring a 3/8" increment between clubs (instead of 1/2") so that the wedges don't get too short and the long irons don't get too difficult to hit consistently, but I haven't tried this myself.

I often wonder about modern lengths and wether tall players truly need their irons over standard.

 

Jack Nicklaus was 6'3" I beleive, and in his hey day never played an iron over 38.5" (including his 1 iron). Stuart Cink's the modern equivalent, he's very tall and plays standard length irons.

 

Of course if you stand very upright, you may need longer irons, but I don't think there should be any set rules on this kind of thing.

 

As you said, the best thing to do is get to a respected club fitter and see what he thinks for sure. Tell us how he fits you once he does!

I am 6'3" and have my irons +3/4" above std., including my wedges...everything is 2 degrees upright as well...some people like to have their wedges the same length, but my wedges are incrementally 3/4" above std. just like my irons...anyone else do this, or do u have your all your irons increase and wedges the same length?

this is interesting...my local club builder believes in having the wedges the same length as each other as well...i tried it but did not like it...so my wedges, like my irons, go up 3/4" increments at a time...what does everyone else do?

I play all my wedges at 36". Makes for heavy sand and lob wedges (about E1), but I like it that way.

I'm 6'2" and play my irons +1/2. I think the important thing is to find a good club fitter to eliminate doubt and experiments. Get fit correctly the first time and save yourself some money. :golfer:

As stated, you can't make a decision based on other peoples height and measures.

 

I'm 6' 4" tall, wrist to floor: 35½", Hand legth: 8" and I have my Mizuno irons done ½" over and 2 degress upright.

 

But Mizuno irons and irons gerally from Asia are 1 degree more flat than US irons - like i.e. Ping, Taylor Made and Titleist - thus meaning that I have my irons, if produced in the US, custom fitted done 1 degree less upright than my Mizuno irons.

 

So again, I must warn you against getting advice from other people based on their own specifications and not yours :golfer: (cool)
