695 CB or 755

I am going to get new irons on Friday and can not decide which direction to go. I have almost always played Titleist irons and am trying to decide between these two sets. I currently play the 690.CB and like them but it is time for an upgrade. I am a high ball hitter with a usually straight to slight fade ball flight. I am currently a 5 handicap. I figured maybe the vast knowledge of players on this board would have some helpful input. The 695Cb seem to be almost the same as what I have but with some z cut cavity. or would I be better served with the forgiveness of the 775s? Any comments or questions would be greatly appreciated.

The 775's are going to be quite a big stretch IMHO, especially coming from the 690.cb's. They've got stronger lofts than the 804's, and Titleist also did some silly things with the 3&4 irons by extending them an inch, so hard to hit clubs just became even harder to hit :)

The 695's have strong lofts as well, so if you like your high ball flight, you can expect it to come down.

I'd look into the 735's, they seem perfect for you. Control with muscle back short irons and progressively wider cavities and greater perimiter weighting in the mid and longer irons. It sounds cliche, but they combine the forgiveness and control it sounds like you're looking for.

Have you thought about them?

Excellent advice listed above. The staff here (some who eat Titleist clubs for free) is convinced that the 735 is the best set of irons that Titleist has ever made. The 695CB's have not been thouroughly sampled here because no one can tear themselves away from their 735's.

The offset on the 775 will likely kill your look at address, making it hard to get them pointed at the target.

Please check in with us before you spend too much on Titleist or any other set of clubs.

You quote 755 (an iron currently at the prototype stage) in the title of your post, not the recently released 775 (which is the replacement for the 804.OS). Why not wait for the 755 to come out (later this year ?)which as far as I am aware (mainly from the informative posts on this Rolls Royce of golf sites) is the replacement for the current 704.CB. By all accounts this players cavity back 755 (as used by Aaron Oberhalser and perhaps even Jay Hass - going by the current Titleist homepage) should be closer to your handicap requirements, as would the 695CB and 735.CM

I can't speak to the 755s, but I love my 695CBs. I believe the 695s have stronget lofts than you 690s have, unless you tweaked your 690s. The 695CB PW is 46 degrees; the 4-iron is 23 (almost a 3-iron in your 690s). I liked the stronger lofts because it made for an easy choice to chuck the 3-iron in favor of a hybrid (although hitting my 9-iron with an easy swing nearly as far as my old 8 took some getting used to). I think the irons are very solid and reliable; however, they would probably seem much more beefy to you than you are used to with 690s - but that is a good thing in my world. I got a really good fitting before ordering these clubs, which likely helped at least as much as the quality of the clubs did.

JLN, just wondering how you like your iron/shaft setup.

I'm also considering the 695CB's and the 735CB's, but want to lower my ballflight. So thinking about moving from Rifles to DG's. However, S300's are a little soft and a little scared of full X100's. Not sure whether to go with hard-stepped S3's, soft X1's or regular S4's.

How do you like your S4's, and did you consider soft-stepped X1's or other options?

Shibumi - I really like my iron setup. When I was fitted for them, I was surprised at what my pro recommended for shafts - I haven't particulary enjoyed S300s recently, but I had been thinking the other way (maybe lighter with a lower bend point, maybe Nippons - my pro put that idea to rest in a hurry). At any rate, I decided to trust the pro - and since I got the feeling he was debating in his own mind whether to recommend X100s, which had me a little worried (I'm not getting any younger) - I considered the S400s a moral victory.

I'm very happy I listened. These clubs are rock-solid, and I like the weight of the S400s very much. They have lowered my ball flight a little, but not so much that I feel I can't get height if I want it, and I don't feel like I have to overpower the shot to get it to do what I want. If anything, I feel like the weight takes care of itself and I really don't need to swing very hard.

I had considered hard-stepping S300s in the past, but never did it. I don't know what the results would have been - I've been told that S400s are a little like hard stepped S300s, but heavier than soft stepped X100s. Can't confirm that from personal experience. I can tell you that I haven't lost a ball hard left with these irons, and I can't say that about clubs I've had with S300s in them.

I have very little experience (mostly not to my liking) with Rifles, so I can't really comment there.

Hope that helps.

To anyone in question, the 735's are excellent, and one of the best offerings out today.
