Callaway Five Woods

Looking for a new five wood and was considering the Callaway Steelhead, Steelhead III, Big Bertha or X. Anyone have experience with any of these and able to reccomend one?

As a normal Ho I have owned all of them. In my opinion the X is the best fairway wood Callaway has ever made. And that is saying quite a bit because the Steelhead III is a classic.

Come on. 14'000 members and only one has ever tried a Callaway fairway wood? What I would ideally like is a good spread of opinions to allow me to decide. Please make an effort to post your opinions.

I have a big bertha 4 wood and love it. I am in the market for a 3 wood and i am favoring the Callaway X Tour. IMHO Callaway makes the best fairway woods to date. I doubt that you would go wrong with any of the clubs you listed.

Cally has made some great fairway woods but IMO, the original steelhead woods are the best. Still have a 4+W and 5W as backups. Its a great feeling club and so easy to hit.

i had a steelhead 5 wood but recently sold it...why??? bcos im an idiot...best club ive evr hit...really penetrating flight and nice rounded head shape n wonderful feel

why have you locked yourself into only callaway? give the sonartecs a shot and you wont be dissapointed. if you are set on callaway i liked the old steelheads the best. that club changed fairway woods for ever.

I have the steelhead III 3w and 5w... they sit a little closed and if I tee the ball up I'll hook the things, but if I hit it off the deck they fly great. So I never tee them up.

 

I haven't really found a use for a 5w on a course... so right now its in the back up bag.

I've played all of the most recent versions of Cally FW's and just love the X I currently have in the bag. I can't say for sure it's the best of all Cally's, but it's as good as any that's for sure.

Just saw this - took my new Cally X 5 wood to the course today - it's tremendous.

 

What's odd - it that the tip is .350, I usually take a stiff but am using a regular flex. May have to change the shaft later but it's working so far. Easy to make clean contact. long and high.

I have the callaway x series 5wd and by far its better then the older versions. I dont find it to be a hook machine like the older versions. ITs pretty long and and has a good ballflight to it

I picked up a 3wd and 5wd Steelhead Plus last year for $50 each brand new... considered as one of the best heads Callaway has ever made. I have no complaints at this point.

i still play my steelhead III 5 wood...love it couldn't ask for anything more

I just put the 2004 Big Bertha 3 and 5 wood in my bag. And they aren't going anywhere for a long time. They are shafted with Nippon 950 steel, and are easily the best fairway woods I have hit. The 3 wood is solid and suprisingly long off the tee, and idiot proof off the deck. The 5 wood is the real gem. I can hit that thing with authority. The sole is versitile, I can hit it off the fairway or out of the rough with ease. In fact I was just overwhelmed how well it plays out of the rough. Very forgiving, carries well for the trajectory. I'm giving serious consideration to taking out my 3 iron and getting myself the matching 7 wood, they are that good.

The new X Fairway wood are the BEST tat Callaway has EVER made!! Hands down. Try one and you will see. :)

I have a steel head that knocked my 2 iron out of the baga bout 1 year ago and I have never looked back.

 

it comes off the club wonderfully and I can hit it anywhere. It is so easy to hit off the tee a blind man can do it. Example: yesterday I was 230 out on a par 5 after a nice drive. Side hill lie, the ball above my feet to a slightly elevated green. The ball came off the club wonderfully and landed softly on the green 25 feet from the pin. That club has allowed me to 2 putt for a bunch of birdies.

Right - here are my thoughts. A lot of good feedback on the Callaway Steelhead. If I'm able to find one that will be a definate purchase. However I think I may have a better chance of finidng a Big Bertha and so I am on the look out for that. Thanks for all the reviews and if anyone has any other views I would appreciate hearing them.

I've been playing the X 5 wood for about two months and it's the best fairway wood out there next to the TEE Exotics which I have in a 3 wood. The X sets up square and is easy to hit off the tee or turf. It's long, straight and hits the ball high but, not too high. I agree with some of the previous posts that it may be Callaway's best ever. :)

so your looking for a callaway 5 wood. i woul have to say that you should really consider looking at a 7+ 2004 big bertha wood instead of a straight 5 wood since the 7+ has the same loft a 5 wood a bit of a smaller head and is almost garenteed to sit square. hope this helps

Nothing comes close to the X 5 wood.

So for all of you who have or hit the X 5 wood... Is it longer than the Steelhead III 5? By how much?

 

I'm asking cause I hate hybrids but I was looking for something with a little more loft than my Steelhead III 4 wood. If I would hardly lose any distance and gain height, that would be perfect.

I just demo the Callaway X 5 wood this evening. Played nice, it sure would fit in nice to my other two X Callaways. It was easier to hit then my hybryd, however I worry that my home course does really require a 19* wood and with the local pro selling the X 19* for $200 plus I either explore ebay or wait till I move to another course where the club is necessary.
