Wood Bros Texan - Part 2 x 2

Here are two more Texans I have. The gamer was my Dad's gamer for a while. The other is a backup I have. Also, it is neat to notice the different shape between the two, and also the location of the bore thru.

They each have a steel shaft in them. A s300 and a s400 in the other.

what's the plug in the bore through on the bottom one? it's hard to see in that pic. i don't see a screw. is it wood or what? do you know if that's the factory shaft?

Beautiful clubs! I love the WB Texan driver. Its a work or art and yours are great looking! Very classic. I love all the WB stampings like the "Wood Bros" signiture and the oil rig. I never get sick of looking at a Rosewood Texan. The one that doesn't have the screw in the bore through doesn't have the original shaft. All Texans when originally assembled had the screw on the bore thru. When it was reshafted a wooden plug was put in the bottom. Interesting on the 2nd one the insert is more square than most I've seen, could have been a custom order. Nice.. Thanks for sharing those beauties.

edit- 2nd Texan looks like its got some nice carbon in the wood. = old growth bottom section of an old tree. Awesome! And the "WB" stamp to boot

FYI - I have one that I believe is original and mint, shafted with EI-70 graphite shaft that does not have the screw in the bore plug.

Ah good point! I'm almost positive WB never put a screw in the bore thru when a graphite shaft was installed. Not sure why, maybe reduce the risk of damaging the graphite if the screw butted up against it.

I think there are two risks with screws in bore plugs for graphite: One, the screw goes through the plug and into the side wall of the graphite and makes it split apart; or two, that the screw over-tightens the bore plug and that leads the bore plug to put additional stress on the tip of the shaft.

The wall thickness for graphite is thicker than steel, so there is also less room for the screw.

Putting a screw through a graphite shaft would definitely (negatively) affect the structural integrity of the shaft, and I am not at all surprised to hear that Wood Bros. did not do it...
Good eye on the insert, Fred! The pic of the second insert is definitely more square..
