The Pace of Play

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

New member here! =)

So I just got finished playing with my father. Ever since the 9th hole we were stuck behind a foursome. 3 men and 1 woman.

The 3 guys had decent pace. The woman was horrible. She took on average about 6-7 shots before the ball moved 10 feet.

One hole really set my dad off. This lady took about 10 shots and the ball moves about two feet. Her husband who went ahead, turns around and decides to give her lessons. Keep in mind this is a Weekend and the course is busy.

My dad had it. He shouts, "You guys!!!"

I just laugh my head off. You take many shots to get somewhere? FINE, but to have your husband turn around and give you lessons on the course? Come on!!!! Go to the driving range. That is disrespectful and ruins the pace of play. We're waiting 10 minutes for her many shots.

Do you think my dad was out of line? I didn't. I thought it was hilarous!!! :cheesy:

And to add on top of that, we even returned her putter she forgot about 15 feet in front of the green. How does that even happen? LOL

Because usually people carry cell phones while playing these days (some country clubs being the exception) they should have signs on the course or score card that say "in case of slow play, call ___ -____ ." This way a ranger could be easily dispatched and determine if someone is off the clock or holding up groups behind them. Unfortunately, it only takes one slow group to gum up everything. And i always say that if a group is inconsiderate/ignorant enough to slow play for everyone, they'll probably also get insulted when you ask them to pick up the pace, which is why it should be the golf courses responsibility to enforce the pace.

Everyone should have to watch a short video or a talk about pace of play and get a card that states that have had this talk. Nothing is worse than golfers thinking they have paid their money so they can do what they want without regard for others. If we do not speak up they will never know. I do not blame the people because most have no idea about pace of play and on course lessons. The courses should understand there has been a boom in people taking up golf in the last 5 years and need to inform them someway.

The thing is when we finished the 18th hole we told the employee there about the situation. He completely agreed with us. Their attitude was trash and disrespectful. He told us he's been a member here for a while, so that means he did know about pace of play, he just didn't give a *beep*.

I see people not keeping pace of play all day long. I guess it will never end. :russian_roulette:

how many of you guys will approach a slow playing group in front of you and ask to paly through? I never do this because I am not sure on the etiquette.

If there is atleast one hole ahead open I have no problem asking a slower playing group in front of us if they mind us playing through. At the same time I have no problem offering the group behind us if they want to play through us if they are playing quicker then us. I don't like waiting and I don't like feeling rushed so if everyone would let the quicker players play through then problem solved. If the course is busy then accept it is going to be a slow day.
As far as etiquette goes I would think a slower playing group should offer to let a faster playing group play through. I know I always do. I will wait a few holes to see if they offer then I will just ask because by then the question of etiquette doesn't concern me.

What's sad is that for every story like this, there's also a situation in which a group's pace of play is perfectly fine, in rhythm with the group in front with no way of speeding it up, and some overzealous, life-hating, pot-bellied course marshall harasses the group and says "I'm going to have to ask you to pick up the pace" simply for the joy he attains from being a jerk. Pace of play is a bigger problem on public courses than jerk marshalls, but not much bigger.

The course is no place to teach, unless you are alone on the course. Very rare unless it's a private club.

In my experience marshals are not helpful. I've seen marshals who think that if you are not standing and waiting on the group in front of you, you are behind pace. MORONIC.

One time I played behind a group of rank beginners. For holes we dragged on and on. We asked the marshal to ask them if we could play through, since we were three experienced and quick golfers...or at least tell them to hurry up. He said NOTHING to them when he drove by...when the round was over we learned he was friends with the snails we were playing behind.

My sister was an accomplished amateur golfer, shoots in the 80's still. Never fails...we're on the course, some marshal is going to come up to us and tell us we're off pace, no matter how slow the group in front of us is.

I heard it can take 6 hours to play Pebble Beach, because so many people go play who have little or no experience in golf.

The only way out of this quagmire of national slow play, is not with more marshals. Or time limits.

Slow play drives a lot of good golfers out of the game, or at minimum, reduces the number of rounds they play because it just takes too long.

In 10 minutes a person can prove he knows how to play well enough to get around the course. This alone would improve pace 15 to 30 minutes, all by itself.

from your post..... I am not sure, but it sounds like your saying you caught the group on the 9th hole, and ever since then you were being held up.....

as for calling a marshal....I guess that would have been a option....I say good luck with the results on that one.....

If there was a golf hole open in front of this group, I myself would have just jumped in front of them ....if there was no open hole, then you have nothing to really complain about, the whole course is slow.....
