New Orleans Golf: Where to Play

I started thinking about this after reading another poster's question about the TPC of Louisiana. I am pretty new to this area (less than a year), and I haven't done much to explore the golfing options in New Orleans. That is a problem.

 

For those of you who live in NOLA or have golfed here while on vacation, where are your favorite public courses? Anything around the city is fair game.

 

What do you think? I'd love to hear from the experts.

I'd like to know too. I may be relocating to the area soon. I stopped by Metairie Golf and Country Club and it seems pretty nice. However, I have emailed them to ask for any info regarding membership and I have not heard anything back.

I hear English Turn is nice. Do you know of anything else?

English turn is very nice. I would also recommend Lakewood wich is just aroun the corner from english turn.

[size="2"]I grew up in the Metairie/New Orleans area but post-Katrina I've relocated to the Gonzales area (in between New Orleans and Baton Rouge). Here's a few courses for you to check out....

[b]City Park[/b] - This is more of a "tradition" to play as it's courses were where many of us first learned to play golf in New Orleans. At it's peak it had four courses but when Katrina rolled into town it destroyed all three of its current courses and only fairly recently have they finally reopened one course. It's also where they held the first PGA event in New Orleans. Ok, so much for the history lesson....the course itself isn't much but it's definitely one you should play as part of the history of the city.

[b]Audubon Park[/b] - This executive course is wonderful to play, definitely get out there! While you're in the neighborhood, swing by Franky & Johnny's restaurant for a good bite to eat. I like to go by there for an early lunch, then play Audubon so afterwards you can sit out on the nice porch of the club house and enjoy a cold one and the view from under the Oaks!

Over on the West Bank is [b]Lakewood[/b]. A very nice course indeed! It has some unusual features, [/size][size="2"][font="Arial"][size="2"]a Fleur de Lis shaped bunker, other bunkers designed as a tribute to the local firemen, one is shaped like their shield and another one flamed shaped and filled with red sand. Also several of their trees were destroyed from Katrina but instead of removing all of them, some were left and a chainsaw artist was brought in to perform some wonderful carvings on them. Truly something to see!

Also highly recommended are the [b]TPC[/b] and [b]English Turn[/b] courses.



If you want to branch out some from the New Orleans area, heading towards Baton Rouge, check out:

[size="3"]How ya doin? I was born and raised in New Orleans and have played pretty much every course within a couple course public and private. If you're looking for a Club to join I'd definitely recommend English Turn. They are having some great deals during a membership drive. I'm a member and love it course is great(Jack Nicklaus Signature Design), it kind of what I like to call Florida Links course, open with lots of water, people are great and we need some new members. Club house is beautiful nice gym, pool, tennis courts. The only draw back is that is on the westbank and is kind of far from Meterie or uptown. But if you'll be living downtown it super close. Let me know if anybody is interested in joining and we could set something up and I can show whoever around. I'll make a list of some other clubs/courses:

Tiberlane CC: Private, also on the westbank even further out then English Turn, Robert Trent Jones Sr Design. Front 9 is nice back nine is so-so, nice wooded park style layout. Nice clubhouse, tennis, and pool.

Lakewood CC: Semi-Private, Also on the westbank close to English Turn, used to be a phenomenal golf course before Katrina was completely redone is now gimmicky junk, bunkers shaped like flames,Fleur de lis and firefighter logo (no BS they have some plastic animals on the course). No clubhouse yet. A WRXer should do better.

Stonebridge CC: Semi-Private, again on the westbank pretty far out but was nicely redone post-katrina with 27 holes. Nice clubhose.

TPC of Louisiana: Semi-Private They actually have a pretty cheap membership that you only have to pay cart fee. So-So club house no real amenities plus its always packed. I think the course is garbage, but that's just me.

Metarie CC: Private; Course is just Ok. Wide open, boring. Its usually in good shape. Clubhouse and amenities are great maybe the best and its in a great location. Very expensive to join and need referrals.

New Orleans CC: Very Private; Course is nice. Nice clubhouse and everything, very very expensive to join and need countless referrals and recommendations.

Chateau CC: Private, its a nice short course in good shape out in Kenner. Nice clubhouse, gym, and pool. Shouldn't be too pricey.

Now there are some other great courses a little further out and it all depends on where you're gonna live. I can give you some info on those if you'd like.
Money Hill CC in Abita Springs (course is awsome, I think the best in LA)
Beau Chene in Mandiville
Covington CC in Covington
Belle Terre CC in LaPlace (Its a Pete Dye course but don't get too excited)
Oak Harbour in Slidel

I think that about covers it.

As far a public courses its really limited.

City Park North is the only one that re-opend post Katrina its awful and really over priced at $22
Audubon is a nice executive course right in the middle of Uptown.
Lakewood CC see above is trash and they have the balls to charge $70+
Bayou Barrier is mediocre but cheap.

Go down to Patterson and play Atchafalaya Golf Course. Really nice course.
