Am I mad to start out classic?

Being a newcomer to golf (been playing since august last year) am I crazy not to take advantage of the supposed "technological advances" of modern kit? I play most of my golf with 1974 Mac Tourney Blades (I can't seem to get on with my ram CBs), and either use a Ti Driver with a steel 4 wood (when I think that it MUST be better for my game) or a persimmon 4 1/2 and Mac eyeomatic driver (when I play the clubs I like the look and feel of). I have yet to break 100 for 18 but usually score in the mid to late 40's. has anyone else "bucked the trend" and started out with older (pre CB) kit? I need some success stories to inspire me :)

I started with blades, but that was back in 1982. Never really played anything but blades, except for a brief stint with Mizuno MP-32s.

Play with what you like and have fun.

As Drew says play with what you like the look of, there is always the option of a classic iron but one which certainly give you a little more room for error with the Classic Ping Eye 2's

I agree with Drew and MoaningM but I don't think you will do yourself any harm by starting with the classic gear. There is a strong argument that persimmon and blades will help you develop a better golf swing over time rather than the modern gear that can act somewhat as a crutch. There is a place for both so I wouldn't get too fundamentalist about it but equally I don't think your crazy for going the route that you have. I am sure I am not alone in admiring you for playing classic stuff and embracing refinishing etc at such an early stage. I think it will stand you in good stead

The game is all about having fun....if you are enjoying yourself, keep doing what you are doing. There will always be time to try something else if you get frustrated.

If you already own equipment, I say stay with it until you have a better idea of what you like and what might work better for you. I started with blades because that's all there was, but I have to say that the first set of Pings I bought were a breath of fresh air.
