The Pulls (and what causes them)

What is the most common cause for consistently pulling the irons? I've been noticing that s light (and sometimes severe) pull has become my go to miss . . . usually a hair of a draw but more a dead pull. This morning sneaking out for a quick 9 I hit a couple of mid to short irons that were smacked, nice ballflight, but 20-20 yds. left of target . . .

I would suspect either (1) grip too strong (I was having trouble getting my angles too look right at setup - feels like I have to fight to get the clubface to be perpendicular to my stance line for some reason); (2) sequence gets out of whack and shoulders/chest pull out of the swing, causing an over the top or outside-to in-move down the line.

I don't think the problem right now is getting "stuck" and flipping the hands. I'm familiar with that one and it doesn't feel like that.

The one "feel" that seemed to counteract the pull was to feel like I hung a bit more on the left side (esp. w/ short irons) and stayed in the shot the whole way.

But your tips are appreciated . . .

Mugnut,

I have been fighting the pulls in the last few seasons as well. Part of it for me at least came from my set up. The last assistant before last season i worked with, had me working on drawing the ball. He had me trying to get the club back inside so much, that my shoulders kept closing more and more. A few quick sessions with a new pro led me to much better alignment and getting the club parallel to the line on the way back and down again.

Many times off the tee, I can tell when I come over the top and pull it pretty significantly.

One other thought might be lie angle. If you have changed your swing at all and the lie angle is too steep, you will have the tnedency to have the ball go left.

One other non-pull related... when did you get out of Bowdoin? I had a few buddies who played hockey there, Joe and Charlie Gaffney who are legends as is my understanding. They were there 91-95. Also, one of my good buddies at my club, I just met his brother in law this weekend and he is also a Bowdoin grad, albeit a little later around 98 or 99 I think. Steve Fahey, know him or the Gaffs?

A pull is the first cousin to a slice, therefore an over the top move along with a closed clubface is probably the culprit.

Probably not be a chronic slicers Over the top action, just a little roundhouse move in your swing that sends your shots left.

Focus on driving the right shoulder down or pulling the left shoulder up (they both work together, whatever one does the other does the opposite, so focus on which is easiest for you) and your shots should straighten out.

A) Bowdoin '93.

B) is the "roundhouse" move basically spinning out the shoulders and thus pulling the club across the line from outside? That would explain why "Staying in the shot" i.e. holding the shoulders back as agaisnt the hips, seems to cure the problem . . . the problem definitely surfaces when I get quick, which would explain the too-fast shoulders . . .

Yes, that would be a roundhouse type move, again nothing too serious, just focus on the shoulders.

This type of problem does appear when you get a little quick, which is another phrase for "trying to catch up" just make sure everything is synced up and done in the right sequence and you should be well on your way to solving your problem.

The bad players pull is usually an over the top move.

The good playes pull is usually a result of losing all your axis tilt at impact which puts your right shoulder above and over the plane and forces the club to turn left prematurely after impact.

Figure out which one you are:

if you are the first one you need to work more on a flatter left wrist and a more square face.

If you are the second one you need to work more on keeping your head BACK while your tailbone goes FOWARD.

Yes, jim

I am the second one just had a friend look at my swing who plays on the Cleavland tour and i am tilting forward with my head it s***'s and is hard to get out of. I have been just try'ing to keep my head steady on the down swing. I feel like a robot but went out on a decent course for nine playe the first three in 5 over the last 4 in three under so there is light ahead.

A closed clubface causes a hook.. not a pull. An out to in swing path causes the hook (over-the-top).
