Looking for a nice mid-mallet.

Any suggestions?

Started looking around for a new putter. I love the feel of my old Mizuno TP Mills but I wanted something with a clear sight line. I'm thinking I would like to get a small mallet-ish putter but nothing too crazy looking. I like more subtle, traditional styling. I like the headsize of my friend's Circa 62 #5. He also has some Taylormade TP mid mallet type thing that sets up really nicely. If I could keep it too about $150 tops, that would be ideal. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I can't guarantee it is less than $150, but if I were in the market for a mid-mallet, I would go with Byron Morgan's new one. It is very clean, traditional and pure quality. I do know that he will do custom stuff to it, as well. Check the pics and if it looks interesting, drop him a note at [email protected]. Byron is a heck of a guy that is underrated in the putter game, in the USA. His stuff is pretty premium in Japan, even on the JPGA.

Drop him a note, you'll really like what you hear.

I would consider the Guerin Rife putters. They put the best roll on the ball that I have seen of any putters. Plus they can be had for under $150. The Mr. Beasley model seems to be pretty nice as well as the Mid Mallet if you can find one. The Roll Groove face put a sweet roll. Just my opinion

I got my Rife 400 Mid Mallet(which is pictured above in Lefty's post on the left) on eBay. They're hard to find because I think only 2000 were made. Do a search every week on eBay and ones bound to come up. I've seen two up there in the last two months. The Mr. Beasley is a full mallet.

 

I love my 400 Mid. Great roll, great sound - a really nice "ping" sound to it. Feels soft too.

Tracy, I've never liked mallet type putters but the Del Mar 3.5 really got my attention. I love the T alignment lines on it. I usually don't like any sight lines or sight dots on my putter but the Del Mar's lines really work great. This putter was probably in the bag the longest of anything lately. Only changed because I happened to come across three other putters that I couldn't pass up. It's still rotated heavily with those.

You might want to look at a T.P. Mills Fleetwood, it is a mid-mallet.

If you don't mind inserts, Odyssey makes a nice-ish mid-mallet in the Rossa II, or in the #5 that will definitely fall under the $150 mark. A nice Gauge Designs (Japan or US, I prefer Japan) can be had for around $150-200 on the used market, if you have the patience to wait for them to come up. You might also get lucky with a used TP Mills putter--but you'll probably find yourself over $200 (but oh-so, very much worth it!). I'm not all that big a fan of the Fleetwood shape though, but I've read the Boxwood will be a more rounded headshape.

 

All that said, I'm very much digging that Byron Design putter LaMont posted. I think his current email is [email protected], but I've sent and received correspondence through both, and he is a heck of a guy to work with. Were I to get another mallet, that would be it!

 

One thing that you might want to consider is how much you are willing to spend. While you "ideally" would like to stay at or under $150, the quality in putters go up exponentially from the $200-300ish range (after that you're pretty much paying for exclusivity). While you might satisfy your craving for $150, why not feed your hunger for $250 (retail on the TPMills at tpmillsputters.com)? Good luck!

I second the fleetwood.... it'll be yours for $250 and that's a fantastic deal. Very clean putter, more square which you don't see hardly ever, and really clean.

The Fleetwood was the first putter I had David make for me a few years back.

Thanks for the responses guys. I may have to increase the putter budget a bit. It does seem like the quality jumps dramatically with that extra $100 or so. For a website that costs absolutely nothing to log on to, golfwrx sure ends up costing some cash. All those putters look pretty damn sweet. Thanks for the input. I have a lot to think about.

Havana model I make is smaller in size. Heel to toe is 3-1/2" and front to back is 2". Comes in doubel bend and center shaft. There are a few out here on Golfwrx who own one. Higher CG makes for a better roll and overspin. See at www.bigoakputters.com.
