lots of slate and rocks left behind?

One of the courses near me opened a few years back, and is still having problems with ground condition. Pretty sad, because it is a challenging course with glass fast greens. Unfortunately, all the surrounding hills have plenty of slate in them.

Pretty optimal situation, 7 minutes from work, really cheap to play. But the fairways are garbage, any solid shot reveals the slate pieces underneath. I could see this really beating up my clubs. Should i game a different set, that i don't mind beating up. or just forgoe the course all together?

I have heard the same thing happened with many of the established course around here as well, first 5 years they were all the same, and then they grew in and now they are good courses. Does any other area have problems like this?

You're right, that place has shale and rock all over. Some of the roughs are so bare that the erosion netting is showing. I played it last summer, it was so rock hard that you had to land your approach shot 10 yards short of the green to have a chance at staying on.
