San Diego advice please..

Hi..

 

Planning a trip to San Diego and have done a bunch of reading on courses etc. Ideally wanting to play some combo of:

 

Torrey Pines South

Aviara Four Seasons

Maderas

Barona Creek

Rancho Bernado

Steele Canyon

Arrowood

 

Can anyone suggest a good place to stay with decent access to perhaps 4 of the above without having to drive an hour in every direction each day?

 

It would be perfect to stay at a course with access to driving range/short game practice area, but looking for something cheap (prefer to spend money on golf not the hotel rooms) and proximate to a few places for beer/food in the evenings..

Barona and Steele Canyon are in the East county and close together with Barona having a great parctice facility and casino/rooms.. The others are in North county, check hotels in Carlsbad!

Arrowood is garbage you have to play the Crossings at Carlsbad. And torrey pines . Trust me on the crossings it's primo and use the Carlsbad area code for the good rate

Rinch, I guess were just polar opposties ! I think Arrowood is much better than The Crossings... Planes flying overhead, 1/4-1/2 mile between some tee boxes, some greens cant even be mowed because of funky angles and horrible closing hole! But thats just me!

Give San Vicente in Ramona a shot, It's about 12 miles east of Barona Creek. Second on staying at the casino. Kind of a secret, Ted Robinson design, lots of scenary, reasonable price. Play from the tips with a little wind you'll use every club in the bag.

My Parents live across the street from the 1st green. Pop's says it's in great shape.

Rancho Bernardo Inn is a great place but a little pricey. If you want top play all those courses, it is about the most centrally located.

Barona & Steele Canyon = South East 25 miles

Rancho Bernardo = onsite

Maderas = Poway = 10-12 miles south.

Torrey= 30 miles west, Same for Aviara

Not sure about Arrowwood, it's new since I lived there.

Have fun, lots of other great courses around. Pala Mesa and San Luis Rey Downs in Fallbrook,

Eagle Crest and The Vinyard in Escondido.

I'll be down there mid June, can't wait.

Scrap Arrowood (I live in Oceanside and it's really not worth it) and stay in Del Mar/Solana by the racetrack somewhere. you can take the 56 to the east county and the 5 for the rest. you might want to play Mount Woodson instead of Arrowood.

Ya but if I were traveling to sd I'd rather have some great ocean views than staring at unbuilt property. And arrowoods prices are rediculous. All the jc courses are not worth it IMO

Four Seasons is a must. The flowers have bloomed quite a few weeks ago and its just an all round beautiful course in outstanding condition.

Maderas is my next fav. The back nine has some killa elevation changes. Steele Canyon's Canyon nine is similar but not the 3 nines overall are in not as good condition as Maderas.

Salt Creek had their greens punched four weeks ago but its a pretty decent track in the south.

Buddy told me the North Course at Torrey has punched greens now. Just a thought for you in case you decided to take it on due to the South Course being too busy.

You are fine staying in the Hotel Circle area around Mission Valley. Enuff places for food and pretty central for San Diego. Carlsbad is about 30min away tops.

Played TP North today and you can still see the punch hole, but it was rolling quite nicely! Barona, TP and Maderas are the must plays!

Poway/Rancho Penasquitos/Scripps Ranch along the I-15 corridor are probably the most central locations to stay with that list of courses. Look specifically in the those areas near the intersection of I-15 and Hwy 56. Steele Canyon would probably be the longest drive, but still not too bad (~35 minutes). None of those areas will break the bank for a hotel stay, at least not compared to the coastal hotels. Mission Valley would get you a bit closer to Steele Canyon, but pretty far from all of the northern courses that populate your list.

I'd not worry about places to get food/drinks... You'll find the same huge block of the same chain establishments every few blocks, just like you do everywhere else in the country!

get up at 4AM & do Torrey. it is expensive (174 for So & 75 for No) but it is worth it. its fun to play with the locals early as some of these guys have been doing it for 30 years. maderas is great, RB Inn is nice and Barona is a man's course. Have fun and wear lots of sunscreen

barona, steele canyon, salt creek are your options in the south east. up north they have all been listed. Keep in mind with traffic a drive from one side of SD to another can take an hour cause these courses are 30-40 miles apart. Nice places to stay would be the La jolla area, Torrey lodge would be good. barona Hotel, Carlsbad. Delmar. nicer area's minus barona but they did just have the us open sectionals and was supposed to be setup tough.

Aviara is a must. The course is spectacular as is the Four Seasons. Torrey is also fun as it is always nice to play "where the pro's play".

I would hit Torrey for sure.
Skip La Costa if you were thinking that one-so so--overpriced IMHO. Some really nice looking holes, but the conditioning could use a bit of work---especially for the price.
Another vote for Mt. Woodson---really really cool layout. Better be able to hit a straight ball though or you will be hurtin for certain.
Try Balboa if you want a cheap a$$ kickin, tough little muni that one!

Mt Woodson is scenic, but target golf and you WONT search for astray balls because the canyons are steep and its warm out there and you dont wanna meet mr. rattler!
