Golf in Blacksburg, VA

Having to travel to Blacksburg over Memorial Day an was wanting to get a round or two in while I'm there. Any recommendations or must plays in the vicinity? Thanks

All of the VA golf mags represent this course as a must play. I have not played it myself but I have acquaintances who have and they indicated it is worth it and very tough.

+1. This is a great course and can be played at a reasonable rate. It is the home course of the VT Hokies. It can be played up to around 7600 yards if you want.

I am originally from Blacksburg (my parents still live there) and have played most (if not all) of the courses in the region. The best courses in the area are all private: Blacksburg Country Club (the course I grew up playing and still play the most), Roanoke Country Club (hosts the Scott Robertson Memorial Tournament - a prestigious junior tournament won by players such as Paula Creamer, Kevin Na, Hunter Mayhan), and Hidden Valley Country Club. If you are a member of a private course elsewhere, you may be able to get on at one of these clubs (if you have your pro call the course in advance) as I wouldn't consider them ultra exclusive (however Memorial Day Weekend would be tough).

The best option (by far) for public play is the VT River Course. The only other options you should even consider are Auburn Hills Golf Club (in Riner) and Castle Rock (in Pulaski). The River Course is nice but it feels like it needs more property to have a good layout - the fairways on adjacent holes are just too close together and it can get really wet when it rains. Auburn Hills is just a run of the mill public course. Castle Rock is not a great course but it is very scenic - I would best describe it as "an experience."

River Course or Castle Rock is the way to go. If your are in the "cheap golf" mode, the Tech course on campus isnt too terrible and the Blacksburg Muni course "The Hill" is kind of fun, especially if you like having a chance to drive like 5 greens. Both of those two are 9 hole courses though.
