Just a quick note on those Precision FCM shafts.....they are actually Accra Tour Steels cut to 7.3. The True Temper/Royal Precision takeover complicated matters (in a legal sense :cheesy:) so it was decided to call them Precision FCM for public consumption.

The Accras are somewhat similar to the old FCM shaft but much smoother feeling with a softer tip. The 5.5 soft stepped is outstanding...I love everything about it. I thought Tour Flighteds would be my shaft forever but the Tour Steels are even better.

Watching at SBS yesterday his iron shafts defiantly had steps? IE not rifle? Am i wrong or has he switched to DG or KBS?

mturner560, I noticed the stepped shafts also. Couldn't be sure, but once or twice I could have sworn he had ap2's in play yesterday?

Matt-
Geoff uses Royal Precision FCM Rifle 7.3 shafts in his irons.

loved watching great 5 wood shoot and the tell tale yellow signifying it must be a cobra fairway wood...but the caddy slips titleist headcovers over his 3 and 5 wood that did not match his actual clubs.
Why do they do the silly headcover trick? Why not just show what a pro really uses rather than try to imply he is using the latest line up of titty woods?
Silly to me

I agree with you, but the vast majority of TV-watching golf fans will see a Titleist headcover and assume the club under it is a therefore a Titleist. Only a very few keen-eyed and picky fans will note (or care) that it's actually a Cobra. From a marketing perspective it's a valid tactic.

Years ago, before the advent of big money contracts with required club usage clauses, it was extrememly common to see a big staff bag with a conspicuous logo for Brand X, and upon close inspection find it was stuffed with clubs from every manufacturer but Brand X. The sponsors didn't care as the casual golf fan saw Brand X on the bag and then went out and bought Brand X clubs 'because so-and-so uses them' blissfully unaware that, in fact, he didn't.

I'm not sure if Titleist is making him use their headcovers. From their site http://www.titleist.com/players/playersequipment.asp?playerid=462 it doesn't list Geoff as even using a Titleist wood. I think he just wanted his bag to match for the lovely winner walk down 18 ;)

When the USGA's new groove rule changes were first announced, some people assumed that every PGA Tour player would immediately start carrying a 64° wedge. The thinking was that if players were not going to be able to spin the ball as much with the new grooves, they'd need more loft in order to stop the ball with trajectory. Right?

Wrong—at least in the mind of defending WGC-Accenture Match Play champion Geoff Ogilvy.

"I think the way that things were going, with grooves getting so sharp and company's getting so good at making them, a lot of guys were grabbing a 64° wedge," he told me Tuesday evening. "But when I was younger, the idea of a 64° wedge was laughable. I mean, you just wouldn't use it. But it became usable."

But the smaller, duller grooves that players must compete with today have made using a super-high lofted wedge tricky again. In fact, Ogilvy feels that he can't get enough spin out of his 60° any more, so he pulled the club out of his bag this week and is going with a 58° Vokey Spin Milled C-C wedge instead.

"If I think back to when I was a kid, I never liked hitting pitch shots with a lob wedge off short grass because the ball seemed to roll up the face and create a loopy flight," he said. "But hitting with my 56 sand wedge, or a stronger wedge, it would grab onto the face and spin."

This year, at the season's first event in Hawaii, the ball started rolling up the face of Ogilvy's lob wedge, just as it did when he was a junior player.

"I had probably not done enough practicing with it," he admitted. "But you can practice on the range but there is no substitute for being in a tournament. Then, in Abu Dhabi, I was just like, 'This is not right.' I was shying away from playing this club, and you don't want to have a club in the bag that you don't want to hit. And arguably, for a lot of guys out here, it's the most important club in the bag."

A loft difference of two is almost impossible to see, but the difference allows the top grooves on the club to grab more of the ball and impart more of the spin that he needs around the greens. And for Ogilvy, who defeated Alexander Noren 7 and 5 on Wednesday, it makes all the difference.

Interesting that Ogilvy's quoting the same line of thinking that Phil Mickelson has recently spoken about; that the top edges of the new grooves are not sufficiently sharp to make the highly lofted wedges work as they should.

Every man and his dog was saying that a 60-degree-plus wedge would be indispensable for the pros from this year. If you believe Mickelson and Ogilvy though, it's almost the opposite.

Exactly what Peter Kostis talked about earlier this year. Pelz said more would use a 64 (so did a lot of others) but now more great wedge players like Phil and Geoff are saying that the higher loft wedges are now worthless. Only time and testing will see. I personally like a 58 over a 60 or 64. But that's just me.
