Tilley sun hat recommendations?

Recommended Posts

After a quick search I want a Tilley sun hat. Only wore reg golf caps up but need neck & ears protection.

I'm looking at five models

T5MO organic cotton airflow

TWP1 waterproof nylon

LT5B breatheable nylon

TH5 Hemp

T5 Cotton Duck

Any recommendations/opinions?

I have the LTM5 AIRFLO[sup]®[/sup]Nylamtium[sup]®[/sup] Hat. It is an excellent hat, but I would go with the T5MO organic cotton airflow if the weather is very hot. The waterproof versions are not for very hot weather, they are not as breathable. I would get two, one for dry and one for wet weather.

I have one that's made of the original "Cotton Duck" fabric and it's probably the T5 model.

It's my second Tilley, the first one was "Nylantium" and had a bit wider brim than the T5's. I found the wider brim, while it probably does shade the neck slightly more, was a pain in the brim when the breeze blows more than 10-12mph.

So after 10+ years when it finally started look like poo I went with a T5. The combination of the slightly narrower brim and slightly stiffer material makes it usable in our usual 15mph or so winds around here although it still gets annoying in a really strong wind. And the stretchable, breathable, soft feeling Cotton Duck is just a more pleasant material to me.

I do take them at their word and wash it after just 2-3 thoroughly sweaty summer rounds of golf. Apparently if you wait until the sweat stains start looking yellow/brown it's too late and it will stay discolored. You need to wash it before the sweat attracts dirt and then settles into the fabric. And I also give it a whole-hearted stretching over my knee after each washing. Mine's a 7-5/8" which should probably be 7-3/4" for maximum comfort but I couldn't find one that big locally.

It's been washed almost a dozen times now and looks just like new. Good hat.

Another vote for the LTM5 AIRFLO, got one a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier with it.

The Tilley that I bought recently has an all mesh crown, the LTM8. It is not on your list, but, has been nice for me so far. With the mesh crown, it is exceptionally breathable without letting sun in. It has a slightly larger brim than the T5M0. I have not found out yet if this will be a problem. The website, tilley.com, has some interesting stuff. It will tell you how the hat is supposed to fit. I have also called them and they have been very helpful.

Guess I should have expected the normal GolfWRX slant on putters would extend to hats -
--get two for when one's being washed
----but three covers you for wind, rain and heat
--then get six
------they just came out with mesh, better get eight :cheesy:

Seriously, thanks for all the input. I was leaning toward the waterproof nylon on looks but will go in a different direction. Off to get the measuring tape and check the website.

Same here, but found it to still be a little on the warm side in the mid 90's, I just purchased an Aussie soaker, soak the brim and the top in water and will last 4 to 5 holes and then rewet, doesn't give me a cold chill but does provide a cool atmosphere for the ol head.

I know what you mean about "get two but eight would be better". At least that's easier to do with $80 hats than with $200 shoes!

Regarding the waterproof thing, keep in mind that the regular cotton duck Tilley hats will shed a bit of water in a drizzle or brief shower. The only time the "waterproof" one would be a big advantage is in cold weather if you're caught in a downpour. The cotton duck would eventually get soaked and feel very cold if it were, say, 50F or so and really raining.

So I hate to mention two hats but I do have an inexpensive GoreTex bucket hat that I toss in the bag whenever cold rain is a possibility. In any other situation the cotton duck Tilley works fine and keeps the rain out of my eyes in a quick sprinkle that isn't worth using the umbrella.

I have the LTM6 nylon hat. It has a wider brim than you are looking at. I called Tilley and asked them what hat would they recommend that would be cooler than the LTM6. They recommended the T4MO Organic cotton airflo.

For what you are looking at the equivelant would be the T5MO (which is on your list). It seems that the Organic Cotton hats are the ones the do not get as "hot" as the nylon ones.

I'd like to get a more breathable hat with a stiffer / smaller brim.

+2 the cotton is just cooler than the nylon in the heat like now, the nylon is fine any other time however.

I ordered the T5MO AIRFLO[sup]®[/sup] Oragnic Cotton and wore it for 18 holes today. Definitely cooler than the Nylamtium[sup]®[/sup] and didn't flap in the wind (it was breezy today). Sharp-looking too.
