75 mph Swing Speed--ultralite shaft???

Recommended Posts

Due to health problems I've lost a lot of weight and strength. My driver swing speed dropped down to the 75-80 range. My drives 6-8 months ago averaged 240-245 yards. Now if I hit it right on the sweet spot I'm lucky to get 200-210 total distance. I'm switching to a Senior shaft from regular flex and I need advice as to whether I should go with a 45-55 gram shaft or stick to the 65 gram shaft. Thanks in advance for your help.

IMO, stick to the senior flex in the 60-65 gram range. While you'll gain distance from the 45-50 gram shaft, you may not have control over it. Swing too hard and you'll hit it off the planet. Keep it smooth, your results may be good. I would go no more than 65 grams. When you get some strength back, you'll be happy you'll have the heavier shaft.

I've lost some swing speed due to shoulder problems and just for the heck of it I bought a 55 gram Aldila NV shaft to try in a Tour FT-5. Don't know what to exspect but I see a lot of stiff and X-Stiff shafts in 55 gram range. I saw last week that Michelson uses a 55 gram shaft in one of his drivers.

I found it is more to do with the flex then the weight. I just put Nippon 95g senior flex shafts in my Mizumo MP 52's and I am back to hitting my 7 iron 150-155. "A" flex (senior)in my Taylormade driver and I am back to 250-260.

Had been a ten handicap. I have had two hip replacments and over the years six knee surgeries. A little sore after playing but the results are getting better. Getting older sucks!

True getting older sucks in many ways. Some of us try new equipment to get us back to yester years. I went through it for awhile, and now I am back to my GAT95 stiff shafts.

Your question about lighter shafts may give you some increase in swing speed. If distance is your objective then the lighter shaft is your shaft of choice, I perfer acurracy that I get from my siiff shaft. Then I moved to the white tees, a 210 drive works just fine.

Best of luck on whatever you decide.

At 49 I just switched to a "soft regular" in my new Ping K15 driver. Light but not too whippy. Working well for me.
I have also over time had to learn to go up a club for longer shots. I remember when I could hit a 8 iron 150 but now I'm hitting a 6 iron. No big deal there for me. I could care less what number is on the club as long as it gets there. I accepted the fact that I'm not 18 anymore a long time ago. It does suck though gettin old!
