Swing Speed Radar vs Suunto G6

Well it seems more and more tech vans are going with the swing radar, www.zelocity.com

 

It's far more accurate than the vector, just doesn't give side spin, but does give spin in RPMs, launch angle, ball speed, and club speed using a doppler radar.

 

I've tried Vectors at demo days and the numbers really didn't match, no wind yet I was hitting it about 20 - 30 yards further than the vector dais I was, the Zelocity uint was pretty much spot on.

I've had pretty similar and frustrating experience with Vectors. The zelocity monitors I've used show what I expected. The Vectors have been on for the most part, but have shown some strange information on two occasions for me.

 

The first was my driver fitting, which was really unfortunate, but was more of a range ball issue and possibly the physical set up of the monitor was off. I was hitting on a range mat but the monitor was set up on the ground about a .5 to .75 inches below the surface I was standing on. I don't know anything about the set up, but I'm guessing that might throw off the launch angle, which was the principle mistake of the fitting.

 

The second was at a Golfsmith. At this store I hit some balls in one of their monitor stations and had a swing speed of 95 (avg of 5 swings). I was boggled by this, so I then went into the station right next to it, same setup (Vector), and had a SS of 108 (avg of 5 swings). Who cares what my SS is, that is pretty significant and if the fitter didn't know what he was looking at, would have come up with completely different recommendations.

 

My advice to anyone getting fitted using this technology is to get your swing measured at a few different places. Golfsmith will not charge you if you tell them you are thinking about buying a new shaft and want to hit a few in the monitor (works best when it's not busy). If you know your approximate numbers, you can call out a faulty monitor and not get fit into the wrong club as I did. At least the people who did my fitting are willing to fix the problem though, but you never know these days, and what a hassle.

Just got a Suunto G6 in. Gave it a whirl today and still trying to figure out what would I use it for.

 

It keeps track of scores, stats, etc..for a golf round and 10 course stats for handicapping. OK, cool, not sure when I will need that.

 

It has a mode where for each swing it can display and store for later analysis your swing time, tempo, degree of backswing, and clubhead swing. Now I suppose the point is that this thing can help you determine when you are off in your swing timing and point you in the right direction. But do I really need a watch for that. I know when my tempo is too quick or too slow, I can not only feel it but the result of the shot screams at me too.

 

I thing the swingspeed numbers are accurate, at least as accurate as any other device in this price range. But I am suspect of the swing length. I hit 40 balls with it, all my swings were under 180*, and ranged from 164 - 176*. Now here is the problem. I purposely did my John Daly move and saw the clubface way past parallel, the Suunto called it 174*. I also did my Darren Clarke punch special and the Suunto called it 164*. So....maybe I need to call Suunto and ask what's up.

 

If you are having serious issues with tempo or the concept of tempo is something new to you than this watch is really good at instant feedback. If you like your tempo, this watch will just confirm what you already know.

 

If you want instant feedback on SS, than this watch is cool. Overall, I like the technology, quite clever, and it shows an interesting glimpse into the future. But with the swing angle measurements not looking accurate and not getting other additional information like feedback on some of my swing flaws, then I wonder what will I end up doing with this watch? Maybe nothing.

 

Or maybe I will have a demo day and you can all hit clubs from my stash with the watch on...for the low price of $100....just kidding.
