Wow the spin!!!

I just bought a new 10.5 905R. I already had one in 9.5. I was looking for a higher launch angle and I like the forgiveness a 10.5 provides. I bought the new one with a V2 shaft and this thing spins like nothing I have ever seen. Is there anyway to get the spin down on this one at this loft or do I have to stick with the 9.5? I have a Comp NT 65 stiff in the 9.5. I was thinking about putting a 65 X in this one. What do you think?? I should mention that I already hit the ball pretty high and I like that.

I guess I should add that I am a low single digit and like to cut the driver. I know this adds spin but, I like the control.

I had an Accra SE80*. This shaft was designed for the bore through and works really well at bringing the spin down. I used to play a 905T 9.5° with an Accra SC75, the 905R is also 9.5° but the launch angle is now higher.

High loft + high spin head = Very high spin

 

I don't know how much you can realistically expect out of it.

 

Have you thought about the FT-3? Very low spin, so you can play a higher loft, but still a very forgiving head.

My thought is to put a Comp NT X flex in it. I am on the borderline between X and S and have always tried to play S. I am not a big fan of the FT-3. I love my 9.5 905R. I hit it with a lot of spin when I bought it but, I put the Comp NT in S in it and it was pretty good. I just like to hit a 10.5. My misses still fly well and the course I play is a lot easier when you can carry the bunkers...

Yea try the comp in it, if that dosen't work try a heavier shaft. If you are already a high ball hitter with your 9.5° I have to question the change to a 10.5°. I play an 8.5° 905S opened up a few degrees so I can't imagine even playing one with so much loft with such similar characteristics as you.

 

Anyways try a comp in an X first, then try a heavier one if the comp dosen't work. What you also want to look for is a shaft that feels more boardy than whippy (for example a Graffaloy Blue over an Aldila NV). Anyways those are just my 2 cents.

Just out of curiosity, how did you open the 905S "a few degrees"? :drinks:

 

I heard that because of the aluminum hosel, its face angle can't be adjusted? Was i misinformed?

Just told the guy that put the shaft in to open it up a few degrees (2). Anyways it sits open so I figured he did.

Try the Accra...it's fantastic...stiffer than a V2 Stiff but with more feel...and seriously long ;)

I don't have any experience with the 905, but I do with the Comp NT and the V2. The Comp NT should spin less than the V2, but whether this will be enough given your description is debatable.

 

I'd check out something like a Diamana Blue, which (for me) produced much less spin than the V2 and Comp NT. Too little in fact.

 

Of course, it is also a lower launching shaft and whether this negates the whole point of going to the higher loft is a moot point.

 

The other obvious choice would be a Matrix Altus, which by all reports is both high launch and very low spin.

 

Alas, both are much more expensive than the Comp NT or the V2, although a Diamana pull can be had for $100 or so.

 

Another possibility is the Grafalloy BiMatrix which I have also tried. It was low spin but I couldn't hit it straight.
